Jay Silverheels played the role of Tonto on the TV series, the Ranger's faithful companion that saved the ambushed Texas Ranger and nursed him back to health.
A ways into the series, Jay Silverheels suffered a heart attack and the writers decided to write "Dan Reid", the Lone Ranger's nephew (Dan was also an often appearing character in the Radio shows), into the series to become the Ranger's sidekick until Jay could recover and return to the role of Tonto.
Jay Silverheels suffered a stroke in 1974 and passed away on March 5 1980 after several years of ill health.

In 1938 Silverheels was runner-up in the middleweight section of the Golden Gloves tournament.

In 1964 Silverheels starred in Indian Paint, a film about an Indian boy and his love for his horse, and in 1973 he costarred in Santee, the story of the relationship between a bounty hunter (person who hunts for fugitives to obtain a reward) and the son of a man he killed.
Silverheels was also active in numerous public service projects focusing on drug and alcohol abuse and the elderly.

Tonto was played by Jay Silverheels (he was born Harold J. Smith, but legally changed his name to his long-used "stage name" in the 1970s) who was born at an Indian reservation near Brantford, Ontario, about 30 miles from where I live.
When he died in 1980, his body was cremated and the ashes were brought back from California and scattered over the Mohawk reservation where he was born.
But it should be kept in mind that the bodies of those who are buried are also all eventually reduced to the indistinguishable earth elements from which man was created (see The Creation Of Man) - eventually, there is nothing left of their physical bodies.
