		The riots were the result of public anger over the manner in which the military authorities handled the return to Jayapura of the body of a former Irian Jayan prisoner.
		Amnesty International is concerned however that when Dr Wainggai refused to be taken to a military hospital after complaining of ill-health, the prison authorities rejection of his request for treatment in a private hospital resulted in him not receiving any medical treatment at all.
		Concern for the safety of the detainees was heightened by the news that some of those arrested were held initially in military custody, increasing the risk of beatings and torture.
