Topic: Jayne Loader

Link-Lit From the Wench of Waxahachie
Loader, best known as one of the creators of the 1982 film "The Atomic Cafe," is now the author of WWWench, a lively collection of Web-based essays and short stories that range from an insider's dispatch on the Sundance Film Festival to a fictional True Confession-style romp through the celebrity bedrooms of Hollywood.
One of Loader's favorite techniques is compiling a sequence of links -- in "ascending degrees of wackiness," she said -- on the same common word, so that successive references to the brain might include everything from a report on rodent neurophysiology to the cartoon character Martin Prince, the student genius on The Simpsons.
Loader has continued to develop the Web site for Flygirls, historical fiction about the Women's Air Derby of 1929, but the transition has reduced the number of "link-lit" works she has posted as the WWWench while she learns to do her own programming.

Indeed, Loader is concerned with the environment, albeit in socio-political terms, specifically, the "ecology" of one's relationship to oneself as mediated by sexuality.
What is so interesting about Loader is the way she abandons narrow political ideologies and fascile conceptions of power in favor of offering a replete selection of ideas, pleasures, and pains without passing judgement;—this she leaves to her audience.
Loader is concerned with the environmental effects of radiation, but she is just as fascinated with political issues ranging from prostitution rights, to Liberal conceptions of woman-as-homemaker, to progressive porn (not an oxymoron for Loader), to the Coalition for Positive Sexuality.

The Atomic Cafe is directed by Kevin Rafferty, Jamie Loader and Pierce Rafferty, and is a fl comedy about the harrowing misinformation surrounding the government's acquisition, development and testing of both the atomic and hydrogen bombs.
Edited by Jayne Loader and Kevin Rafferty, the film is an “artfully assembled collage of official insanity” (7), pulled from an extensive archive of propaganda films originally made to pacify the American public by demystifying the effects of nuclear fallout.
According to Jamie Loader, it was Pierce Rafferty who stumbled upon the catalogue of “3433 U.S. government films” in a San Francisco bookstore – as early as 1976 – and then came up with the idea to make a film about these propaganda films (8).

Released in 1982 to worldwide acclaim, the film culled footage from 50's US pro-nuclear propaganda films to weave an absurd and hard-hitting sequence in which there is no narration: the clips alone pointedly illustrate how naive and trusting were 50s folks in the face of the mighty US government's will to nuclearity.
