Jazz musicians often use improvisations, just as surrealist artists use "free play of their imagination" to create their artwork, which shows the similarity between the two movements in their uninhibited manner of artistic expression (Chipp 366).
Again, jazz music shares similarities with this aspect of surrealism because musicians often combine a variety of melodies (thoughts) into their songs, allowing the listener to understand the song as a whole.
Jazz musicians' freedom to "run around the room" and dance "around their instruments" shows the freedom and improvisational mood swings associated with the jazz movement (Gray par.

CD Review of E. Shawn Qaissaunee - Painting Pictures on ESQ Music @ jazzreview.com
With strong undertones of Metheny, Martino, Jim Hall and a touch of Benson, Shawn Q's "Painting Pictures" is an incredibly solid record of originals, led by Shawn Q and featuring an ensemble of exceptionally talented players behind him.
His lines move in and out of the chord structures like liquid, and his tone is warm and dark, somewhere between Martino and Bobby Broome, but his strength is his melodic consciousness; each line really 'sings', and you can tell he's not just burning scales.
Painting Pictures, however, is the result of several talented musicians: The rhythm team of bassist Chico Huff and drummer Tom Palmer is exceptional; keyboardist Jeff Knoettner's playing is textural and complimentary to the other parts; man on the sax Eric Powell really soars over the tunes, and his style integrates well with Shawn Q's.

Federico began his art career painting the landscapes of the Louisiana bayou, and making sketches of the jazz musicians who plied their trade in the smoky clubs along Bourbon Street, including Ray Charles, Taj Mahal and Doc Cheetham.
The music is clearly influential in Federico´s paintings, which at first glance seem spontaneous; but a closer look reveals a certain amount of control, with hints of improvisation and rhythm.
