  The JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT
The Jazz Mandolin Project, which began as a group of jazz players that would get together at a local coffeehouse in Burlington, VT in 1993, has become one of the hardest touring live acts out there today.
And to a certain extent, the members of The Jazz Mandolin Project are scientists, pushing the boundaries of jazz beyond the typical through experimentation, all the while maintaining a sense of the acceptable and accessible.
Founded by mainstay mandolin virtuoso Jamie Masefield, The Jazz Mandolin Project is an improv trio with a constantly evolving lineup and a penchant for modern and traditional jazz, rock classics, and world music.

He believes Jazz Mandolin Project's unique membership is a "really great thing because it keeps the songs fresh and everyone brings their own take to the different tunes." New band members also allow Mansfield to "grow as an arranger of [his] own songs," helping JMP to grow as a band.
While JMP's hybridization of jazz and bluegrass has come to define the group over the past seven years, last weekend's shows also revealed a more experimental side of the trio.
Mansfield says JMP's new album "is going to be a lot different than anything [he's] done before" with guest musicians and experimentation with overdubbing playing a large part in the group's new sound.

Masefield, born March 9, 1966 in Warwick, New York, is a graduate of the University Of Vermont, with a degree in environmental studies and geography.
He soon made the similarly-tuned mandolin his primary means of musical expression; and began studying composition and world music.

 Jazz Mandolin Project: Jungle Tango
The JMP's jazz is beat-centric and not particularly concerned with melodic themes.
The kinds of sounds associated with mandolin and piano seem to be deeply buried or bookended by layers of bass and drum groove.
In this sense one could consider the bulk of the recording to showcase an inorganic use of the mandolin, but the tunes move along with an easy grace and the kind of sonic trickery that is fun to deconstruct with repeated listening.

The Jazz Mandolin Project has come so far that it's hard to imagine the concept was hatched and incubated in a small nonprofit coffeehouse in Burlington, Vt.
In 1993, Jamie Masefield, band leader and mandolin player, had a one-night-a-month gig at The Last Elm Cafe, and it was there, he said, that his vision became clear.
But when JMP rolls into town, they will be showcasing a quartet of Masefield, bassist Danton Boller, trumpeter and keyboardist Michael "Mad Dog" Mavridoglou and drummer Jon Fishman from the group Phish.

So I’m not like most mandolin players in that I don’t have a bluegrass background and a lot of the chords I use are different than bluegrass chords or progressions.
In the beginning when the band was just starting out in Burlington, it was anyone who wanted to come and play with me. At this stage, what it consists of is two or three or four drummers and bass players who all know the material and me working with their schedules.
In jazz, everyone plays with everyone else; it’s not like that garage band you started at 17 where the drummer leaves and the whole band breaks up.

Tiny Moore was playing jazz licks on the short, eight-string instrument in Bob Wills' Texas Playboys back in the '40s; David Grisman and such disciples as Mike Marshall, Andy Statman and Paul Glasse have been swinging and improvising on the mandolin since the '70s.
On the debut album, "The Jazz Mandolin Project," the mostly acoustic trio often seems to be following in Grisman's footsteps, but at times the group veers off into a more abstract mode that has less to do with the swing and blues of jazz and more with the abstract improvisation of jam-rock.

The Jazz Mandolin Project: Xenoblast - PopMatters Music Review
The short answer is this: you get The Jazz Mandolin Project, a little get together centered around the mandolin, and sometimes the mandola, involving Jamie Masefield, Chris Dahlgren and Ari Hoenig.
The truth is, however, that the obvious heading of jazz -- easily discernible from the label, Blue Note, a company who prides themselves on some of the greatest jazz since 1939 -- does not truly encompass the music on Xenoblast.
The album is largely jazz, but oft times you'll hear a little Pearl Jam jump out at you, or a little Led Zeppelin, and don't be surprised if you hear a little funk poking out here and there.
