Topic: Jazz Trumpeters

Miles Davis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A trumpeter, bandleader and composer, Davis was at the forefront of almost every major development in jazz from World War II to the 1990s.
He was partially responsible for the development of modal jazz, and jazz fusion arose from his work with other musicians in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Davis's style on trumpet was already distinctive by this point, but as a soloist he lacked the confidence and virtuosity of his mentors, and was known to play throttled notes (a trademark of Davis's) and to sometimes stumble during his solos.

 Electric Trumpets (2)
Jazz has always been difficult to capture in the studio because it is a spontaneous art form, and that is difficult to do in just a take or two.
Because jazz recordings also usually have a much smaller budget than other recordings, they are often recorded in one or two days.
Another idea that has been slow in coming to jazz musicians and their record producers and labels, is that of recording and marketing the music in a different way.

 jeremy pelt: trumpeter/recording artist
A key test of a jazz musician is his or her ability to play and personalize ballads -- and without feeling the need to eventually double the tempo to swing more overtly.
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt's new band premiered at Kavehaz, and with its vibes/guitar harmonic core it struck quite a contrast with the piano-based sextet that Pelt led at the Jazz Standard a couple months back.
Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt seems to be a rising star in the mold of Nicholas Payton, with a bold and vibrant sound.

 Electric Trumpets
Jazz and hip-hop, soul, RandB, and spoken word poetry are all natural traveling mates on the musical road.
As you might expect, trumpet players have been heavily under Davis’s sway, with most of today’s young trumpeters of note carrying some of Miles’s sound and style in their own, just as Miles carried some of the sound and style of Dizzy and Louis Armstrong in his.
Both are extraordinarily talented trumpet players in the jazz tradition despite having grown up in a time when the best of the jazz idiom is supposedly behind us.

British Brass: Jazz Trumpeters in Britain 1950-1970 : an overview by Simon Spillett : Jazzscript.co.uk
After the mid-1950s Shaw's visibility on the jazz scene fluctuated, but by the late 1960s he was playing with the Tubby Hayes Big Band, and in 1970 he became an appropriate founding member of Bill Le Sage's Bebop Preservation Society, a band that made a very welcome relief from the fusion-based approaches of the day.
Deuchar's trumpet playing hero was Fats Navarro, the tragically short-lived genius who had created one of the most lyrical of the bebop styles at the close of the 1940s and whose playing was the prime influence upon Clifford Brown.
His trumpet and flugelhorn solos on several albums made with John Dankworth during the early 1960s are clearly the work of a mind that went beyond mere mimicry of bebop mannerisms.

Surviving recordings show that this young trumpeter had potential that could have made him one of the greatest of trumpeters had he lived longer, and he was a big influence on many artists who came along later.
He put his flashy style to work in recordings of pop jazz that were not well-liked by critics and many longtime jazz fans, but that went over well with young people due to their rock and pop elements.

One of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time (some would say the best), Gillespie was such a complex player that his contemporaries ended up copying Miles Davis and Fats Navarro instead, and it was not until Jon Faddis' emergence in the 1970s that Dizzy's style was successfully recreated.
With his puffed-out cheeks, bent trumpet (which occurred by accident in the early '50s when a dancer tripped over his horn), and quick wit, Dizzy was a colorful figure to watch.

Posted Dec. 22, 2004 -- From King Oliver to Louis Armstrong, Fats Navarro to Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis to Freddie Hubbard, Roy Hargrove to Nicholas Payton, it seems that all great jazz trumpeters, regardless of generation or stylistic inclination, are drawn to the funk.
Each of those aforementioned artists – and there are many more – have steered jazz significantly by incorporating those sweaty, syncopated rhythms, edgy riffs and blues-based melodies we call funk.

Soul Jazz, which was the most popular jazz style of the 1960's, differs from bebop and hard bop (from which it originally developed) in that the emphasis is on the rhythmic groove.
One of the great jazz trumpeters of all time, Freddie Hubbard formed his sound out of the Clifford Brown/Lee Morgan tradition, and by the early '70s was immediately distinctive and the pacesetter in jazz.
Their first collaboration was 1972's Black Byrd, an upbeat, funky blend of jazz and R&B. Jazz critics detested the album and called Byrd all sorts of names, but the record was a smash hit; it became the biggest seller in Blue Note history, and just missed hitting number one on the R&B albums chart.

In the '60s, when John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman were defining the concept of a jazz avant-garde, few knowledgeable observers would have guessed that in another 30 years the music's mainstream would virtually bypass their innovations, in favor of the hard bop style that free jazz had apparently supplanted.
A cornerstone of the Blue Note label roster prior to his tragic demise, Lee Morgan was one of hard bop's greatest trumpeters, and indeed one of the finest of the '60s.
Possessor of a very distinctive rock-oriented sound that is often a bit distorted, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, fusion, and soul jazz.
