Jazz bands usually consist of a rhythm section and a horn section.
During the jazz and swing eras in the mid-twentieth century, the most successful jazz orchestras also empolyed strings and harp in expanded arrangements, but their presence on the bandstand was more for visual impact and not as a key component of the ensemble.
The rhythm section of a jazz band consists of the drums, bass, and usually at least one instrument capable of playing chords, such as a piano or guitar.

My band director had told me in August '02 that I could be in Jazz Band and double on the flute/metal clarinet if I played the saxophone in the Jazz Band until and after the little feature.
The flute is not part of that jazz history and many high school band teachers keep their bands instrument sections without flutes because of the history of the big band.
Last year, the first year that flutes and clarinets were in jazz band, there was one clarinet and I was the only flute, and we both either read the tenor sax part or I read a flute part if there was one.

The Original Dixieland Jazz Band had recorded for Columbia in January 1917, but the session was unsuccessful and the band had to come back and re-record the songs, thus the release of the Columbia sides did not come about until after the amazing success of the Victor records.
The band was an immediate success, with their wacky stage antics, like wearing top hats that spelled out "Dixie", playing the trombone's slide with the foot, and so on.
The band's slogan was "Untuneful Harmonists Playing Peppery Melodies", and their leader Nick La Rocca and cornet player delighted in stirring up the press, describing themselves as musical anarchists and coining fun statements like "Jazz is the assassination of the melody, it's the slaying of syncopation".
