Jazz music’s colorful history is heavily intertwined with the history of the drum set.
Most inexperienced drummers are more familiar with the feel and sound of pop music, therefore, they are accustomed to hearing the rhythmic emphasis in music placed on beats one and three (here we are dealing with a four/four time signature).
A beginning drummer should explore the various approaches to four way coordination that are out there until he finds one that appeals to his own tastes.

The drummers were Tony Williams with the Miles Davis Quintet; Jack DeJohnette with the Keith Jarrett Trio, Jeff Watts with the Wynton Marsalis Quartet and Adam Nussbaum playing on an Aebersold Play-a-long CD.
By using computer-generated jazz trio performances, it was possible to adjust the swing ratio to any value.
The same tendency as in the measurement of drummers is evident with an increasing swing ratio for slower tempi and decreasing swing ratio for faster tempi.

The drummer is the foundation of the traditional jazz band.
On most pre-electric recordings, therefore, the drummer is restricted to the snare drum, woodblock and cymbal; the latter being held to choke the sound.
The very first New Orleans jazz drummers were heard in the early parade brass bands, which relied upon the snare drum and the large marching bass drum, which usually had a cymbal attached to it.

These subdivisions, established by the drummer's cymbal ride, may or may not be adhered to by other ensemble members but the quarter note pulses must be, unless the swing is to be put at risk.
All of this being said, it is important to point out that the most interesting drummers, those who make the greatest contribution to variety in the rhythmic texture, are those who are most willing to abandon the "ride cymbal beat" in order to play fills and accompanying patterns in the drums.
Much remains to be done in the development of jazz drumming styles and an informed knowledge of the creative choices made according to the musical surroundings by some of these extraordinary drummers can provide fertile ground for the growth of new styles.

Weckl is always there, driving the band or soloist forward, but he leaves adequate space for the rest of the rhythm section (Tom Kennedy, bass and Steve Weingart, keyboards) to contribute as well.
Opening with a soprano sax riff that is dangerously close to smooth jazz territory, it settles into a gentle Asian-inspired groove, with Weingart providing a sound like some kind of marimba while offering chord voicings on electric piano that keep things harmonically interesting.
