  Classic Jazz Guitar - Guitarists
When guitarist Tal Farlow (1921 - 1998) died in July 1998, at the age of 77, he left behind an unmatched legacy of jazz guitar music.
In the 1940's Tal Farlow was in New York beginning to influence and capture the imaginations of jazz guitarists and jazz fans with his unique sound and style.
Concord Jazz brought Farlow out of "retirement" in the late 1970's to make a series of recordings that are as astounding in their own way as those made in the 1950's.

Without a doubt, he was the first European jazz musician to really catch on in other parts of the world, and his music continues to inspire groups and soloists ranging from the Seattle-based Pearl Django to the Manhattan Transfer and his fellow Gypsy Bireli Lagrene.
This guitarist was a Virginia native, and came from a musical family that included a brother with whom he often played in later years.
Much as Christian caused a revolution by using an electric guitar in jazz, this guitarist caused a sensation by bringing an electric sound to the blues, and was also an excellent blues singer.

JazzWest.com : Celebrating the Best in Bay Area Jazz : Bruce Forman   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Forman's original fascination with jazz came through his discovery of Charlie Parker and the other beboppers, so it's not surprising that the first major artist to take the guitarist on the road was reedman Richie Cole, well known as a Parker and Phil Woods disciple.
In fact, his commitment to helping young musicians and to giving back to the jazz community is so strong that in 2000 Forman founded the Jazzmasters Workshop, an organization dedicated to providing young musicians direct access to instruments, focused jazz instruction and, perhaps most importantly, personal mentoring from professional jazz musicians.
Most of the workshops are aimed at allowing student musicians specific jazz training, but there are also Developmental Workshops that afford younger students the chance to get their hands on musical instrument and begin exploring the art form for the first time.

Jazz Guitarists: Articles by Tony Oreshko
With Remler it was slightly different: I'd just started to take a serious interest in jazz guitar and had only recently discovered and been enthused by her recordings when I heard of her death.
Remler went on to record a number of albums in a fairly straight ahead bop style influenced by Wes Montgomery (who in turn was influenced by Charlie Christian), yet there was undoubtedly a distinct and original musical voice to be heard in her soloing.
Sadly, in the history of jazz guitar Reinhardt has almost totally eclipsed Aleman, and although their styles had remarkable similarities it is difficult to know who influenced whom.

Wes Montgomery - great jazz guitarists
Wes Montgomery was one of the great jazz guitarists, a natural extension of Charlie Christian whose appealing use of octaves became influential and his trademark.
His jazz fans were upset but Montgomery's albums were played on AM radio during the period, he helped introduce listeners to jazz and his live performances were as freewheeling as his earlier Riverside dates.
The settings range from the organ trios with which Montgomery often worked to tracks with string accompaniment, but the music is all linked by the guitarist's highly original approach, using thumb picking and frequent octave runs to put his signature on blues, ballads, and bop tunes.

Between the years 1947 and 1960, Kessel was rated the No. 1 jazz guitarist in many of the music polls in Esquire, Down Beat, Metronome and Playboy magazines but he was still having a hard time paying the bills.
