Jazz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jazz has roots in the cultural and musical expression of West Africa and the western Sahel, and in African American music traditions, including blues and ragtime, as well as European military band music.
At the root of jazz is the blues, the folk music of former African slaves in the U.S. South and their descendants, heavily influenced by West African cultural and musical traditions, that evolved as fl musicians migrated to the cities.
Early jazz influences found their first mainstream expression in the marching band and dance band music of the day, which was the standard form of popular concert music at the turn of century.

Jazz represented a break from Western musical traditions, where the composer wrote a piece of music on paper and the musicians then tried their best to play exactly what was in the score.
Many of these virtuoso musicians were not good sight readers and some could not read music at all, never the less their playing thrilled audiences and the spontaneous music they created captured a joy and sense of adventure that was an exciting and radical departure from the music of that time.
The second wave of New Orleans Jazz musicians like Joe "King" Oliver, Kid Ory, and Jelly Roll Morton fromed small bands, that took the music of these older men and increased the complexity and dynamic of their music, as well as gaining greater commercial success.

 How Jazz Musicians Practice
Jazz pianists practice melodic playing in a variety of ways: melody alone, with L.H. accompaniment, in 3rds, 6ths and other intervals, thickened with one or two handed chords, etc. Melodic playing is also a key part of improvising.
Jazz pianists may stagger their time between working on specific devices as an exercise and working on the devices within a song.
Jazz is essentially an aural tradition as echoed in the phrase "the records are the textbooks." The extensive texts, methods, transcriptions, and resources on all aspects of how to play jazz are a relatively recent phenomenon.

The cultural impact that these musicians had abroad was staggering; today, it is somewhat difficult to fathom that people willingly risked their lives by listening to African American jazz on the radio, but this was commonplace in Nazi Germany and a rich jazz record smuggling trade went on in the record stores.
Thus, even in one of the most extremely repressive periods in modern history, jazz music brought people at both extremes together as Nazi officers printed and distributed newsletters at the Russian Front detailing where saxophonist Benny Carter would be playing.
