Jazz piano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jazz Piano has been an integral part of the jazz idiom since its inception, in both solo and ensemble settings.
There are as many styles of jazz piano as there are jazz itself, as it has gradually been transformed in the context the changing roles played in the rhythm section in the various styles of Jazz.
The role of the piano in the context of ensemble accompaniment has gradually freed up from a time-keeping role consisting of repetitive left-hand figures to a more flexible one where the pianist is free to choose to interact with the soloist using both short and sustained chordal and melodic fragments.

 The Jazz Piano StudyLetter
Jazz has traditionally been taught by example and by ear, as young players hung around at jam sessions and were perhaps shown a thing or two by an older player in an informal lesson.
What there was tended to have certain flaws—little discussion of jazz rhythm, of the blues, of form, of harmonic rhythm, and of the higher reaches of modern jazz harmony, which has evolved by the confluence of European and African-American musical streams into a remarkably rich pan-tonal system.
The Jazz Piano StudyLetter was the result, and it continued for 7 years and 20 issues before it seemed time to bring it to a close.
