Jazz rap - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jazz rap is a fusion of alternative hip hop music and jazz, developed in the very late 1980s and early 1990s.
Known for intellectual, often socio-political or Afrocentric lyrics and jazz beats (sometimes performed by a live band, instead of sampled), jazz rap has not become a huge mainstream success; it instead sells primarily to a small specialized fan base.
Though jazz rap had achieved little mainstream success, jazz legend Miles Davis' final album (released in 1992 posthumously), Doo Bop, was based around hip hop beats and collaborations with MC Easy Mo Bee.

AllRefer.com - rap music (Music: Popular And Jazz) - Encyclopedia
The word rap, derived from a 1960s slang word for conversation, generally consists of chanted, often improvised, street poetry accompanied by a montage of well-known recordings, usually disco or funk.
Detractors have criticized most rap music as a boastful promotion of violence and misogyny; others have admired it as an inventive manipulation of cultural idioms and credit many rappers with an acute social and political awareness.
Rap has influenced many forms of popular culture, particularly film, and has been increasingly incorporated into pop music.

 "Let's Rap" - JAZZ
Instead of a brush, palette, and paint, the jazz musician uses his brain and fine technique, his instrument, and just twelve notes to put on a "canvas of sound" his feelings, thoughts and emotions.
I use the word generalize because I wish it understood that jazz is very complex indeed, and that it is necessary that the student do much serious study on many different points.
Well, the art of jazz is involved and demanding, and its needs require such characteristics from those who would practice it.

PBS - JAZZ A Film By Ken Burns: Classroom: Lessons 6-12
This lesson is designed to allow grades 11-12 to explore poetry, jazz, rap and hip hop music and discover the common threads that run through the poetry and music, and how the themes and subject matter of the poetry and music reflect the lifestyle of the period.
Jazz band members create imaginary identities for themselves, develop publicity for their tour, and keep diaries of their journey to explore what Jim Crow laws and a segregated America mean in their daily lives while on tour.
As part of their jazz radio broadcast, students interview many jazz musicians, legal scholars and writers; their most important guest on their show is Louis Armstrong, who risked his fame and fortune when he criticized President Eisenhower for failing to publicly support the Supreme Court decision and act forcefully in Little Rock.

The whole thing works like jazz: although the artist has to do a whole lot of work, the effect is generally cool, smooth, effortless, and in touch with an order of thinking that does not require the mathematic studio slickness that many rap producers and IDM wizards rely on.
There's rap about opression, jazz musicians, record digging, weed, and even the color green.
As opposed to top-40 over produced rap, this album gives the impression of two guys, spinnin' and rappin' in a basement in an incredibly thick haze of weed.

PopMatters Columns Will Layman Jazz Today Hip-Hop Hybrid, Jazz's Holy Grail
This disc (later subject to a hometown remix project) succeeded not as a streeter-than-thou jazz record or a smartypants rap CD but on it's own terms, as a pairing of a hip-hop drenched rhythm team laying down live tracks for improvisers who are not afraid to make daring harmonic choices.
Jazz is largely obsessed with song structure and referencing (or consciously breaking from) tradition, while hip-hop fetishizes an opposite sensibility.
It wasn't a hybrid of jazz and hip-hop, but it showed what would later be required to create one: a deep understanding of the other music rather than a desire to profit from a superficial dabbling.

 Us3 Hand On The Torch
As rap artist Kobie Powell delivers the message, guitarist Tony Remy offers a fine solo in the mode of Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, and any number of leading jazz guitarists.
The rap lyrics of “I Go To Work” offer a theme similar to that of the other tunes: despite growing up in a rough neighborhood and facing many obstacles, we are able, with a hardened attitude, to do the right thing after all.
The percussive rap voices, the cooperative horn work, the instrumental solos, the integration of sampling, and all the rhythmic effects that hold it together make this art form interesting, enjoyable and worthy of further study.

the JAZZ LOUNGE - RAP ARTISTS
As the first white rap group of any importance, the Beastie Boys received the scorn of critics and strident hip-hop musicians, who accused them of cultural pirating, especially since they began as a hardcore punk group in 1981.
While rap and rock critics embraced the group's late-'80s and early-'90s records, Public Enemy frequently ran into controversy with their militant stance and lyrics, especially after their 1988 album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, made them into celebrities.

During the mid- to late '90s, as alternative rap moved into a wider-ranging eclecticism, jazz-rap was not often pursued as an exclusive end, although the Roots frequently incorporated it in their live-instrumentation hip-hop.
The jazz connection on these songs is minimal at best, but the well-produced tracks and Davenport's sultry voice are compelling on their own merits.

 CD review: "doo-bop"
By adopting the exciting rhythms of rap and contemporary Latin and African musics (which Dizzy Gillespie has spent the last 20 years doing), jazz can once again make itself relevant to youth without sacrificing any of the artistic idealism represented by the tradition of improvisational solos.
If our choices in jazz are, and lately they have seemed to be, the brilliant but timeworn playing of the neo-traditionalists or the shallow pseudo-jazz pop sounds of charlatans such as Kenny G, Spyro Gyra and David Sanborn, then jazz needs every infusion of originality and daring it can get.
By not only associating his name with rap, but producing a stellar album of vision and taste, Miles will bring mainstream critical attention to a music form too often defined in terms of its most crass and base practitioners.

As summarized in the sublime "Talking All That Jazz," the album was meant to be a musical manifesto of all of the directions late-'80s hip-hop was expanding toward: revolutionary spoken word, JBs tributes, soul jazz, go-go, R&B, dancehall, turntablism, instrumental hip-hop, rap rock, even Miami bass.

Many rappers are simply satisfied with looping old jazz samples to rhyme over, but refuse to as truly embrace this other genre and fuse it with Hip Hop’s current aesthetics to create a new sound.
On this song, Black Thought raps some basic lyrics in a musical call and response type of format, then intersperses them with some vocal improvisations that imitate the instrument that’s supposed to respond in that stanza.
For example, while Jazz artists have trained to improvise with notes, harmonies, and rhythms, true emcees learn to improvise using words, sounds, and flows.

I highly recommend this CD to Fans of Rap/Hip-Hop and Jazz to realize that there is something "Powerful" and "Positive" that can come out of creating Music from the "Soul".
