Joint Electronics Type Designation System - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Joint Electronics Type Designation System (JETDS), which was previously known as the Joint Army-Navy Nomenclature System (AN System) and the Joint Communications-Electronics Nomenclature System, is a method developed by the U.S. War Department during World War II for assigning an unclassified designator to electronic equipment.
JETDS was adopted February 16, 1943 by the Joint Communications Board for all new Army and Navy airborne, radio, and radar equipment.
JETDS was adopted by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1950, Canada in 1951 and the NSA in 1959 (though the NSA continued to use its own nomenclature).

JETDS was adopted by all military services in 1957 and is the most used nomenclature system.
In JETDS, nomenclature is formatted differently, depending on whether the equipment is defined as a system, set, group, or unit.
Unlike in the JETDS designation system, the item name must always be included with the MK-MOD designation to specifically identify the equipment.

Army And Navy Electronic Equipment Designations
All US military electronic equipment are assigned an identifying alphanumeric designation that can be used to determine the platform the equipment was designed to operate on, the type of equipment, and the function of the equipment.
This system is commonly called the AN designation system, although its formal name is the Joint Electronics Type Designation System (JETDS).
The letters AN preceding the equipment indicators formerly meant Army/Navy, but are now considered to be an exclusive letter set that can only be used to indicate formally designated DOD equipment.

For accounting purposes, COMSEC material may be identified by short titles derived from the Telecommunications Security Nomenclature Systems (TSEC); or bear designators derived from the Joint Electronics Type Designation System (JETDS); or a Federal part number; or by short titles assigned by a Military Department.
In many cases, the new CCI category may not be assigned any short title, but may instead bear the manufacturer's commercial designator.
