	Jean Alexandre Buchon - LoveToKnow 1911
		JEAN ALEXANDRE BUCHON (1791-1849), French scholar, was born on the 21st of May 1791 at Menetou-Salon (Cher), and died on the 29th of August 1849.
		An ardent Liberal, he took an active part in party struggles under the Restoration, while throwing himself with equal vigour into the great work of historical regeneration which was going on at that period.
		None of the numerous publications which we owe to Buchon can be described as thoroughly scholarly; but they have been of great service to history, and those concerning the East have in especial the value of original research.

		The size given is for the map only; it is on a large folio sheet measuring 26" x 20".
		Buchon produced the French edition of Carey & Lea's American Atlas.
		He used a better quality paper and today his maps are generally found in better condition than their American counterparts.

		Three years after Carey and Lea issued their American Atlas, Jean Buchon issued his revised, French edition of the atlas, Atlas Geographique des deux Ameriques.
		Following the earlier format with maps surrounded by the text, Buchon's maps are fascinating Franco-American documents, presenting a comprehensive statement of the French understanding of what was still considered the 'New World.' The maps have excellent detail, and the text is filled with information on the climate, economy, topography, government, and so forth.

	Antique Maps of the United States
		The entire western part of the old territory, including today's Illinois, most of Wisconsin and Minnesota, is shown as one territory, named "Illinois." The early 19th century was a time of tremendous change in the United States and this map documents that nicely.
		Three years after Carey and Lea's important American Atlas, Jean Buchon issued his revised, French edition of the atlas.
		This is the general map of the US from that atlas, based on John Melish's rendering.

		The Presidio Nuestra Señora del Pilar de los Adaes, founded in 1716 and rebuilt in 1721, is shown on the left of the map.
		An inset shows the area around the French Fort St. Jean at what became Natchitoches, depicting 'The Red River raft' (Embaras d'Arbres), blockading the river upstream.
		The north coast from Cape de Raye and Cape St Jean was reserved for the French fishing industry (but open to all non-fishery related industry).

		This great map of New York State including Long Island and Long Island Sound, was published by Jean Alexandre Buchon (1791-1846) in Paris for the French Edition of Carey and Lea's “American Atlas,” of 1822.
		The map is finely engraved and detailed and is bordered by historical, statistical and commercial information about the State.

		The comparison reveals that Ross’s publication is valuable in the study not only of antiquity, but also of the cultural history of Euboea in the late Middle Ages and modern era, which is still too little regarded.

		The map is the top sheet of a two-part issue covering eastern Canada and Greenland centered on Hudson Bay and extending north beyond the Arctic Circle.
		The text, in French, and the entire map are rated Excellent with no apparent flaws with only normal age toning along the papers edge.
