Jean Astruc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Jean Astruc (Sauves, Auvergne, March 19, 1684 - Paris, May 5, 1766) was afamous professor of medicine at Montpellier and Paris, who wrote the first great treatise on syphilis and venereal diseases, and with a smallanonymously published book played a fundamental part in the origins of critical textual analysis of works of scripture.
Astrucwas the first to conclusively demonstrate by the techniques of textual analysis that were commonplace in studying the secularclassics, that Genesis was composed based on several sources or manuscripttraditions, an approach that was still carefully being called the documentary hypothesis in the late 19th century.
The forcible "re-Catholicization" of Astruc's Languedoc homeland was a very recent memory, when the Protestant " Camisards " were being deported or sent to the galleys.

After receiving his doctorate in medicine from Montpellier, Astruc was appointed Chair of Anatomy at the neighboring university in Toulouse, and later became physician to the duke of Orleans, Augustus II of Poland, and Louis XV.
Astruc is distinguished as one of the foremost medical scholars of syphilis and its etiology.

 Bazin & Cahiers
According to Astruc, the future would not lie in continuing to do adaptations of Dostoyevski or Balzac.
Jean George Auriol died on April 2, 1950, as the result of an automobile accident.
Bazin also admired Wyler's "styleless style." One of the running controversies in French film criticism would involve comparison between William Wyler and John Ford, and it is clear that Bazin preferred the former, considering Ford a director who did certain things too reflexively or by repeating personal formulae.

In 1753 a French physician, Jean Astruc, perhaps out of a desire to justify his immorality, published a treatise undermining the credibility of Genesis.
Not long after Astruc's ideas began circulating, Johann Eichhorn, the most famous theologian of his day, published the same conclusions as Astruc.
The methodology of Astruc, Eichhorn, and the emerging "higher critics" was notably "simplistic." They presumed that the order of mention for the creation events represented the intended chronology of the text.

He also argued that Deuteronomy exhibited characteristics that made it quite different from J and E and that it was actually fabricated in the seventh century to justify Josiah's centralizing reforms.0 Thus, D was born.
From the time of Astruc and Eichorn, criticism was in a state of development; consensus eluded the higher critical community.
Important figures such as Geddes, Vater, and Ewald arose to challenge doctrines of the Documentary School.0 The Documentary Hypothesis was only one of a number of viable theories that higher criticism produced, the Fragmentary Theory and the Supplementary Theory being others.

Higher Criticism began to be applied to Biblical studies as early as the 1700's by J.G. Eichorn who first related the two, and Jean Astruc who suggested that different sources were involved in the writing of the Pentateuch.
This view was first treated extensively by Jean Astruc in 1753 who used this criteria in his critique of the book of Genesis.
It was Eichorn who extended Astruc’s method beyond the book of Genesis dividing other parts of the Pentateuch into “J” and “E” - two documents written by two different authors that were later compiled by Moses.

The most important early theory came from Jean Astruc, Louis XIVth's private physician.
Astruc found in the text of Exodus 6:2-3 a correlation between two different names for God: El (or elohim) and YHWH (Yahweh).
Astruc suggested on the basis of this passage, that texts that use or prefer the name El or Elohim represented a separate source from those that use or prefer the name Yahweh.

Spiritual Authority: Biblical Criticism in the 19th and 20th Centuries
Similar methods were used by Theodore of Mopsuestia (c.350-428), who exegeted Scriptural texts using grammatical and historical clues; Ibn Ezra (1092-1167), a Jewish scholar of the Pentateuch in the Middle Ages; and even Martin Luther in his exegetical analyses.
But these approaches were not nearly as radical in their approach to Scriptures as that which was promoted by Jean Astruc.
French scientist and physician Jean Astruc (1684-1766) established a method of biblical study which came to be widely accepted in Germany, then throughout Europe and the United States.

The so called higher criticism of the Old Testament had its real beginning in 1753 when Jean Astruc, a French physician, advanced a new theory about the origin of Genesis.
As originally presented by Astrue, the theory contained nothing to which conservatives could rightly object, for Astruc believed that Moses was the author of the Book of Genesis, and there is no objection, from the viewpoint of the Bible believer, to Moses having used documents.
This does not necessarily mean, of course, that it is possible for us, if he did use documents, to determine just what they were and how they fit together.

Who Wrote Genesis? A Third Theory
For over a century, there have been two main, and opposing, theories for the composition of Genesis.
The first theory began with the speculations of Jean Astruc (1684-1766), who maintained that Moses, the traditional writer of the Pentateuch, must have used existing written or oral sources in constructing Genesis.
Later, Astruc decided his source theory was too simplistic.

Bible Commentary: Exodus 6:3 - YaHWeH, the name of God
So striking is this divergence of the divine names that it has been common in critical circles of biblical scholarship to conclude that the writer, or, as those in the critical school prefer, the redactor (a sort of copyeditor) used basically two different sources for the two creation accounts found in the two chapters.
The person who paved the way for this theory of dual sources was Jean Astruc (1684-1766), the personal physician to Louis XV and a professor on the medical faculty of the University of Paris.
First of all, the name Yahweh, "LORD," (notice the English translation convention of rendering this name in large and small capital letters, as opposed to "Lord," which renders another word meaning something like "master") is a proper noun used exclusively of the God of Israel.

Most conservative OT scholars today accept that Moses may have been working from a collection of written manuscripts when he, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, compiled the book of Genesis.

However, the rise of deism (the belief in a non-miracle working God) led to a more skeptical approach to the Bible.
The process which led to the documentary hypothesis began in 1753 with the speculation of a French physician named Jean Astruc.
He was puzzled by the fact that God was called "Elohim" in the first chapter of Genesis, while He was primarily referred to as "Jehovah" (or Yahweh) in the second chapter.
