The Confession of Augustine - Jean-François Lyotard
Translated by Richard Beardsworth
Lyotard approaches his subject by returning to his earliest phenomenological training, rearticulating Augustine’s sensory universe from a vantage point imaginarily inside the confessant’s world, a vantage point that reveals the intense point of conjuncture between the sensual and the spiritual, the erotic world and the mystical, being and appearance, sin and salvation.
Lyotard’s explication of Augustine is also a final survey of the entirety of the philosophical enterprise, a philosopher’s profound reflections on the very basis of philosophy.
Instead, his text centers on what he takes to be Augustine’s central confession: the repeated avowal of an essential uncertainty concerning the status of the faith confessed, of being in a sense already too late, of a difficulty in being no longer of this world while being in it all the same.

Because Augustine had the lowest margin of Liberal victory in Toronto in '93--a deceptive stat, due to the lingering personal popularity of the PC's Patrick Boyer--E-L saw a lively, dirty, all-party '97 race that only led to Augustine increasing her advantage.
Jean Augustine clearly is trying not to annoy anyone on the left in her riding, because (so I've heard) she's agreed not to attend York University president and Liberal big-wig Lorna Marsden's 'Liberal Party Election Countdown Party', a Nov. 7 bash where Liberals can get together and watch the US election results.
Augustine's riding is quite some distance from York and the political fall-out from attending would be minimal, a few votes here and there, but by not attending she's showing she cares more about those few votes than socialising with arrogant and overpaid bureaucrats like Marsden...

Women's rift repaired   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Jean Augustine, who traces her ancestry back to African slaves brought to the Caribbean, has become Canada's first African Canadian female cabinet minister.
Augustine's appointment immediately helped to repair a rift Chrétien had with members of his party's women's caucus who were upset that he gave the women's portfolio last January to Claudette Bradshaw, who already had other cabinet portfolios as labour minister in charge of the problem of homelessness.
For Augustine, now 64, the rise to a cabinet post marks the pinnacle of a career that started in Canada in 1960 when at the age of 22 she arrived in Toronto from Grenada as a nanny.

The Confession of Augustine -- Jean-Francois Lyotard Richard Beardsworth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Lyotard reveals the origins of phenomenology in Augustine's narrative, and in so doing also shows the origins of semiotics to lie there (in the explication of the Augustinian heavens as skin, as veil, as vellum).
Lyotard's explication of Augustine is also a final survey of the entirety of the philosophical enterprise, a philosopher's reflections on the very basis of philosophy.
It is from Augustine’s “I,” Lyotard suggests, that modern notions of the self and the uncertainty of faith and selfhood can be found.
