Charles XIV John of Sweden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the introduction of the Empire Bernadotte became one of the eighteen Marshals of France, and, from June 1804 to September 1805, he acted as governor of the recently-occupied Hanover.
Bernadotte, considerably piqued, thereupon returned to Paris, where the council of ministers entrusted him with the defence of the Netherlands against the English.
On the November 2 Bernadotte made his solemn entry into Stockholm, and on the November 5 he received the homage of the estates and was adopted by Charles XIII under the name of "Charles John".

Bernadotte, who was born in the town of Pau, in the province of Béarn, France, had through the tumultuous French Revolution risen to become not only one of Napoleon's generals, but also a Marshal of France and Prince of Ponte Corvo, a town in northern Italy.
Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte reigned as King Charles XIV of Sweden and Carl III Johan of Norway from February 5, 1818 until his death on March 8, 1844.
The coat of arms of the House of Bernadotte combines the coat of arms of the House of Vasa, (left, with the hint of a French-like tricolour in the background) and the coat of arms of Bernadotte as the Prince of Ponte Corvo (right).

The second period of Bernadotte's career started well, he performed well at Austerlitz and earned his princedom, but his military star was on the wane and in 1807 he again faced dismissal.
Smarting from the dressing down he got from Bonaparte, Bernadotte successfully chased General Blucher's Prussians and forced the fierce warrior to surrender at Lubeck.
In 1818, Bernadotte became King Charles XIV of Sweden and, while regarded as a traitor by the French, began a long new royal dynasty that is still in existence today.

Jean Baptiste Bessières, duke of Istria (August 6, 1768 - May 1, 1813), was a French marshal.
Replacing Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte in the command of the Army of the North, a little later in the same year, the newly-created duke of Istria successfully opposed the British Walcheren expedition, and in 1811 he was back again, in a still more important command, in Spain.
As Masséna's second-in-command he was present at the battle of Fuentes d'Onoro, but Napoleon never detached him for very long, and in 1812 he commanded the Guard Cavalry at the Battle of Borodino and in the retreat from Moscow.

On March 3, 1813, the island of Guadeloupe was ceded by Britain to "His Royal Majesty the King of Sweden, and his successor to the Swedish throne" according to the Act of Succession of September 26, 1810.
This was supposedly in order to keep the Crown Prince "at least partially compensated for the donations and other property, which he had lost as a since being called to the succession of the Swedish throne" and as a consequence of Sweden's involvement in the Napoleonic Wars.
Under his adoptive father, the reigning and yet powerless King Charles XIII of Sweden, the Crown Prince was effectively the regent of the country, and when Sweden sided with Napoleon's enemies, Bernadotte came to be seen as a traitor to his native France.
