He was sent by his département as deputy to the Convention, where he associated himself with the party of the Mountain and voted for the death of Louis XVI.
At the French Restoration he was proscribed as a regicide, and spent the last years of his life at Brussels, where he died.

Cavaignac performed with distinction during the French conquest of Algeria in the 1840s, and in 1848 he was appointed governor-general.
Cavaignac directed the suppression of the revolt, for which he became known as "the butcher of June." On June 28 the National Assembly named him chief executive of France, but he lost the presidential election to Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte (later Emperor Napoléon III) that December.
