  Jean Bertaut - LoveToKnow 1911
JEAN BERTAUT (1552-1611), French poet, was born at Caen in 1552.
He figures with Desportes in the disdainful couplet of Boileau on Ronsard: "Ce poke orgueilleux, trebuche de si haut, Rendit plus retenus Desportes et Bertaut." He wrote light verse to celebrate the incidents of court life in the manner of Desportes, but his verse is more fantastic and fuller of conceits than his master's.
Bertaut died at Sees on the 8th of June 1611.

Jean Chapelain was a tutor and intendant in the household of the marquis de la Trousse, and Paul Pellisson was a secretary of Nicolas Foucquet.
Bertaut, a poet, became the tutor of Henri d'Angoulême, Grand Prieur of Malta, an illegitimate son of Charles IX, and Bertaut secured a place as secretary in the Grand Prior's household for another young Norman poet and friend, François de Malherbe.
Bertaut himself went on to become a reader in the household of Henri III, then grand almoner in the household of Marie de Médicis, and finally a bishop in 1607.
