St Jean de Brebeuf - Saint Jean de Brebeuf
Brebeuf first arrived in the New World in 1625 as a member of the expedition led by, the French explorer Samuel de Champlain.
The purpose of missions, such as Brebeuf's, was to convert the native Indian population to Christianity.
Brebeuf and his associate, French Jesuit missionary Gabriel Lalement (1610-1649) were taken prisoner and tortured to death.

Jean de Brébeuf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Jean de Brébeuf (25 March 1593 16 March 1649) was a Jesuit missionary, martyred in Canada March 16 1649.
Brebeuf’s charismatic presence in the Huron country helped cause a split between traditionalist Huron and those who wanted to adopt European culture.
In 1649 the Iroquois attacked the Wendat (Huron) village of St. Louis where Brébeuf was working along with his colleague Gabriel Lalemant, and both men were captured and tortured, mutilated, and burned to death, concluding, some say, with an act of Iroquois cannibalism on March 16, 1649.

 Jean de Brebeuf
The route followed by Brebeuf and his companions was the Ottawa river route, for the St. Lawrence river and Lake Ontario pas-sage had been successfully blockaded by the hostile Iroquois bent on destroying both the Huron fur trade and the Hurons themselves.
Later, after a fruitless mission to the distant Neutral nation, Brebeuf was sent for a respite to Quebec; for one thing, he had a broken left clavicle as a reminder of that dangerous and disheartening trip.
Brebeuf died at the age of fifty-six years by the kind of death fitting for the first apostle to the Hurons.

Jean’s personal crusade was to be of another nature: clad not in mail but in the fl cassock and round Hat hat of the Society of Jesus, he was to spend his strength and zeal in faraway Canada, working for the salvation of an obscure tribe of Indians.
Five years passed before Jean de Brébeuf was able to return to Huronia, for the expected assault on Quebec—by a ridiculously small squadron of three ships under David, Louis, and Thomas Kirke, French Huguenots serving under the English—forced Champlain to strike his flag in July, 1629.
As Jean de Brébeuf had once written: “Jesus Christ is our true greatness; it is He alone and His cross that should be sought in running after these people, for, if you strive for anything else, you will find naught but bodily and spiritual affliction.
