On March 26, Seattle Slew won the Flamingo Stakes by four lengths in the third fastest time in stakes history, despite being eased by jockey Jean Cruguet down the stretch.
The Belmont Stakes was an easy coronation for Seattle Slew, as the colt dominated the race, winning by four lengths as Cruguet celebrated by standing in the saddle, waving his whip, as the two crossed the finish line.
Cruguet lost the mount after that race, after expressing doubt the horse was trained sufficiently for the race.

Jean Cruguet (born March 8, 1939 in Agen, Lot-et-Garonne, France) is an American thoroughbred horse racing jockey who won the United States Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing.
Cruguet served in the army then competed as a jockey in his native France before emigrating to the United States.
In 1976 Jean Cruguet rode the two-year-old colt Seattle Slew to victory in the Champagne Stakes.

According to Kentucky farm owner-turned-trainer Fred Seitz, 66-year-old Jean Cruguet will get first call on the unraced 4-year-old Worthy Lover (by Rizzy), a New York-bred in training with Seitz, when the horse starts for the first time at Keeneland.
"Jean has been breezing occasional horses for us and a few other trainers out at Keeneland for quite some time," said Seitz, owner of Brookdale Farm near Versailles, Ky. "He's very fit, I think he told me he weighs about 114, and he looks very good in the saddle.
Cruguet, who won the 1977 Triple Crown aboard Seattle Slew, rode his last race in 1996.
