A war-time directory of the école Normale Supérieure in Paris confirms that about 2/3 of their student population was killed in the war.[DJ] Young men studying after the war had no young teachers, they had no previous generation to rely on for guidance.
According to Jean Dieudonné, it meant that students like him were missing out on important discoveries and advances being made in mathematics at that time.
André Weil, Claude Chevalley, Jean Dieudonné, Henri Cartan and Jean Delsarte were among the few present at these first meetings, they were all active members of Bourbaki until their retirements.

Similarly, people close to the journalist who was murdered, Abdias Jean, denounced Thursday the maneuvers of diversion orchestrated by some sectors close to the interim regime to try to keep quiet this revolting case and to divert the public opinion?s attention.
Abdias Jean died in a Jan. 14 police raid on Village de Dieu, reputed to be a bastion of gangs loyal to ousted former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Jean's murder is one among a spate of summary executions in poor neighborhoods that witnesses say were committed by the police during raids ostensibly against criminals and armed groups opposed to the government.

Jean Dieudonné was educated in Paris, receiving both his bachelor's degree (1927) and his doctorate (1931) from the École Normale Supérieure.
After working at Rennes, Nancy and Sao Paulo in Brazil, he went to the USA in 1952 and was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Michigan.
Dieudonné was one of the two main contributors to the Bourbaki series of texts.

Aust. Math. Soc. Gazette Vol 22 No 4
In his introduction Dieudonn\'e states that the book is written for those who are not professional mathematicians, to give some appreciation of the thrust of current mathematical activity.
As might be expected from such a master as Dieudonn\'e, his is the story of the great movements in thought which have moulded mathematical activity to give it the shape it has at the present time.
What a great finale to a brilliant mathematical life: to look back over the great edifice which is modern mathematics to which he had contributed so significantly and to discern for students of the next generation the motivation and great themes of contemporary mathematics.

The mathematicians who collectively wrote under the Bourbaki pseudonym at one time studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris and were admirers of the German mathematician David Hilbert.
The founders included the Frenchmen Claude Chevalley, André Weil, Henri Cartan, and Jean Dieudonné; after World War II they were joined by the Polish American Samuel Eilenberg.
Members agreed to retire from the group at age 50, but the group's ranks were replenished with new recruits.

And reflecting on Bourbaki's bright idea which revolutionized mathematics, my idea was to consider, within the architecture of mathematics, logical structures as mother fundamental structures but different from the three Bourbakian ones (algebra, topology, order).
In fact at this time I discovered at the library of the university of Sao Paulo a book by the French logician Jean Porte published in 1965 (the year I was born) and entitled Recherches sur la th‚orie g‚n‚rale des systŠmes formels et sur les systŠmes connectifs, with the same guidline idea.
Porte wrote: "Formal systems" considered here will be some mathematical structures (the word "structure" is taken here with a meaning close that the one given by Bourbaki, but slightly different), not much, not less "fundamental" than the class of algebraic structures for example.
