Millet, born in 1814 in the Manche region, was the son of a farmer who had decided to become an artist.
Millet, who was not involved in any of the revolutionary movements that occurred in France, remained 27 years in Barbizon where he used to scour the forest almost every day.
Millet became much admired in the U.S at the end of his life as well as other painters from Barbizon whose works were bought in quantities by many American collectors.

He became the artist of the typical harbour folk: sack porters, sack makers, emigrants, dockers, bargees, and tramps.
At the end of November 1904 his young wife fell ill. Van Mieghem depicted her in an impressive series of drawings and pastels that rate alongside similar work by such artists as Rembrandt (The Serie of Saskia) and Ferdinand Hodler (Valentine Godé).

The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec's is hosting the exclusive Canadian showing of Millet to Matisse which comprises 64 masterpieces from the collections at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

The son of a farmer in Gréville, Normandy, Millet did not leave home to study painting in Cherbourg until he was 20 years of age.
Fighting against great odds, and suffering a long period of extreme hardship, Millet exhibited at the Salon for the first time in 1840, and married two years later.
During this period his main influences were Poussin and Eustache Le Sueur, and the type of work he produced consisted predominantly of mythological subjects or portraiture, at which he was especially adept.

(1814-75) The son of a small peasant farmer of Gréville in Normandy, Millet showed a precocious interest in drawing, and arrived in Paris in 1838 to become a pupil of Paul Delaroche.
In 1848 he exhibited The Winnower (now lost) at the Salon, and this was praised by Théophile Gautier and bought by Alexandre Ledru-Rollin, the Minister of the Interior.
In 1849, when a cholera epidemic broke out in Paris, Millet moved to Barbizon on the advice of the engraver Charles-Emile Jacque (1813-94) and took a house near that of Théodore Rousseau.
