Jean Françaix composed his Clarinet Concerto in 1967-68 and dedicated it to Fernand Oubradous, a conductor, chamber music teacher at the Paris conservatoire and bassoonist at the Opéra de Paris.
It is an aerobatics display for the fingers with looping the loop, steep turns and sudden dives to terrify the soloist, who must have nerves of steel and thousands of hours’ flying time under his belt.
Jean Françaix has left clarinettists not only a splendid concerto but also an opportunity to develop their art further.

After all, dangerous though it may be to generalize, it is not difficult to say that French composers have not been concerned in their art with the forehead-creasing issues of man and his universe but have been content to paint aural canvases of elegance and refinement, of cool detachment and/or insinuating voluptuousness.
In that much of his music conforms to most of the above description, Jean Françaix is a typical French composer.
And, along with Francis Poulenc, he is possibly the most Parisian of 20th-century composers, in the sense of being debonair and lighthearted, a boulevardier of wit and unabashed sentimentality.

Finally, Jean Françaix's (1912-97) symphonically proportioned Quintet (1948) marries the composer's peculiarly pungent harmonic style to his quirky sense of humor, as in the first movement's comical "circus music" with its trapeze-like ascending and descending chromatic runs on oboe and stopped horn.
All told, this is a well planned and marvelously performed program, graced with wholly natural and realistic sound from Supraphon, not to be missed by any fan of 20th century chamber music.

The composers of Spain and Latin America have built the strongest modern pillars of classical guitar music, so seeing works by the Spaniard Rodrigo and the Mexican Ponce doesn't surprise me. Seeing a French concerto, however, made me look twice, just to be sure.
Jean Françaix, however, has written several works that use guitar.
He tends to get length by putting together short movements (this concerto has five).
