		Jean Françaix was born in Le Mans on 23 May 1912.
		Coming from a musical family (his father being composer, pianist and director of the Conservatory in Le Mans, his mother a singing teacher and founder of a famous choir), Jean Françaix took his first lessons with his parents before continuing his studies at the Paris Conservatoire.
		There, his teachers were Isidore Philipp (in whose class he was awarded the first prize for piano in 1930) and Nadia Boulanger (composition).

		Finally, Wehage asked Jean Françaix to compose a song cycle for an upcoming tour of Japan with the French baritone Philippe de Gaetz and the Japanese Pianist Moyuru Maeda.
		The work « Huit Historiettes de Tallemant des Réaux » for Baritone, Tenor Saxophone and Piano, was Françaix’s last completed work and was premièred in May, 1996 in Paris in the presence of the composer, shortly before his sudden illness and death.

		As typical with Martinu, the composition consists of several essentially unrelated themes, unified by common characteristics such as the extensive use of syncopation, pointed articulations, and arpeggiated patterns.
		Jean Françaix wrote many fine pieces for clarinet, including a Trio with viola and Piano, a Clarinet Quintet, and a notoriously difficult concerto.
		Like Debussy’s Premier Rhapsody for clarinet, the theme and variations was written for a competition.

		The composers of Spain and Latin America have built the strongest modern pillars of classical guitar music, so seeing works by the Spaniard Rodrigo and the Mexican Ponce doesn't surprise me. Seeing a French concerto, however, made me look twice, just to be sure.
