Classical Notes - Georg Tintner - The Gift to Be Simple, By Peter Gutmann
Shortly after posting the initial version of this article, I received several eloquent emails from Tanya Tintner, the conductor's widow, in which she kindly shared many facts of her husband's life and insights into his outlook from a forthcoming memoir that transcended the secondary sources upon which I had relied.
Georg Tintner (1917 - 1999) took firm control not only of his ensembles but of his life, which he enfolded with two bold gestures that defined a man who accepted few compromises, both professionally and personally.
As a rising star in Vienna, the twenty-year old Tintner already was a noted composer and performer, and seemed destined to take his place among the elite of the musical establishment.
