As the political and social situation deteriorated over the remainder of the past decade, Jean remained at the microphone, perhaps quixotically, speaking with the voice of the people, for the people, to the people until the morning he was gunned down in the shadows of his studio.

Jean-Jacques Bertrand, the leader of the Union Nationale, with 17 seats in the Quebec National Assembly, although having received only 20 % of the vote in the April 29, 1970 election (as compared to the PQ's 23%), was Leader of the Official Opposition, and acted with judicious restraint in his statements.
Jacques Parizeau, the President of the Executive Committee of the PQ, was much more circumspect than Levesque and, except for his signing of the petition, seemed to have acted with discretion.
He courageously reversed the decision taken by Bertrand in Bill 63, by the adoption of Bill 22 (which is another story), and not the least of his achievements was the handling of the October Crisis.
