Theodore Roosevelt   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
France's ambassador to the United States, Jean Jules Jusserand, receives the president's invitation to "take a promenade with him," as a compliment and an honor.
The French ambassador soon realizes, however, that President Roosevelt's idea of a walk, is not a "stroll in the Tuileries Garden or in the Champs Elysées." The party on this outing travels out into the country, and follows the president as he makes a straight course, travelling "pell-mell" over everything in his path.
An astonished Ambassador Jusserand nevertheless refuses to complain, recalling later, that he "had the honor of la belle France in [his] heart." He is soon relieved, when the group reaches a stream, thinking that they would turn back and end the hike.
