  Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir
Lenoir stopped pursuing commmercial gain with his engines after about 500 units were sold, as he didn’t see it as being a practical replacement for more traditional forms of labor.
Althought Lenoir was a brilliant man, inventing the first practical internal combustion engine and many other useful devices, his inventions were commericial flops, and he died a poor man on August fourth, 1900 in La Varenne - Saint - Hilaire.
Despite his downfall at the end of his life, his engine was later developed further, it improved and expanded, and it can be credited as being the basis and backbone of many industries all over the world today, and was one of the greatest and most influential inventions of the nineteenth century.

By 1863 Lenoir had fitted one of his engines into a small car which, although it ran reasonably well, it was grossly fuel inefficient and very noisy.
Around five hundred Lenoir engines of between 6 and 20 horsepower were built before the design was superseded by later innovations.
Lenoir's engine was the first of it's type to be manufactured commercially and was also the first to be used for road transport.

Lenoir, Jean Joseph Etienne   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Several people had claimed to have invented an internal-combustion engine, but not until Lenoir in 1859 did a practical model become a reality.
Lenoir built a small car around one of his prototypes in 1863, but it had an efficiency of less than 4% and although he claimed it was silent, this was only true when the vehicle was not under load.
The real value of his engine was for powering small items of machinery, and by 1865 more than 400 were in use, driving printing presses, lathes, and water pumps.

Internal combustion engine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In 1858, Jean Lenoir invented the first practical internal combustion engine.
It relied upon coal gas that was sucked into the cylinder at the beginning of each stroke and then ignited to push the piston to the other end of the cylinder.
The design was later improved by Gottlieb Daimler who focused on making the technology practical for use in automobile s most notably by incorporating a gasoline carburettor.
