Jean Lesage : The Last Arch-Romantic or North-American Experimentalist?
Lesage's perfect awareness of context, "medium", with the corresponding need and ability to engage with it, is possibly the greatest experiment of all, one as pregnant now as it was 100 years ago.
Lesage is indeed a master at scanning through tradition to find the locus of the "Romantic" gesture, which he replicates and genetically modifies as shamelessly as the proponents of cloning.
Lesage is fully aware of this continuous paradox of complexity within kitsch (and vice-versa) and shuttles endlessly between moments of self-indulgent, self-conscious, Brahmsian Schwung and moments of pure decadent beauty, Mahlerian in its spareness and bold tonality.

The underlying belief in Quebec, during this period, was that French Canadians should not be content to play a second class role in socio-politico-economic matters and that the key to a full, ‘normal’ development of the community rested in the utilisation of.
The government came to preach a belief that had been deeply imbedded in the subconscious of French Canadians since the days of Riel and of the Mercier government: the government of Quebec was the national government of French Canadians (increasingly referring to themselves as the Québécois) and Quebec was the fatherland of all French Canadians.

Union Nationale defeats Lesage's Quebec Liberals - "On This Day" - CBC Archives
Jean Lesage's Liberal party had fully expected to win another term after the 1966 Quebec election.
But Lesage's 1966 election loss was partly blamed on his inability to convince the population of the merits of those changes.
Lesage "believed that his program was in the best interest of Quebec — and he was probably right — but he did not convince the farmers that their children should bus 20 miles to and from school," said the June 7 Globe and Mail editorial.

On the issue of education, Lesage stated that it was "the first problem which we must solve."[10] Lesage continued to describe his stance on education by writing: Pour bien remplir ses devoirs de citoyen dans un societe fortement evoluee, l'education et l'instruction sont devenues plus necessaires que jamais.
Lesage's first step in reorganizing education came in 1961 when he passed a series of laws collectively referred to as the Grande Charte de l'Education (Magna Charta of Education).[14] This legislation was designed to solve the most pressing educational problems which Lesage felt were of most concern.
Lesage and his cabinet therefore felt that to successfully preserve French in Quebec, the education system was the place to start.[58] This was one of the larger steps the government took in its educational policy and it, in turn, placed nationalism in the classroom.

A "flabbergasted, but pleased" Lesage declined the offer, deciding instead to run in the next Quebec election, which he did and lost, opening the door to a more nationalistic Daniel Johnson, a split in the Liberal Party ranks, and the birth of the René Lévesque-led PQ.

Quiet Revolution - Quebec History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
The Quiet Revolution is the name given to a period of Quebec history extending from 1960 to 1966 and corresponding to the tenure of office of the Liberal Party of Jean Lesage.
The term appears to have been coined by a Toronto journalist who, upon witnessing the many and far reaching changes taking place in Quebec, declared that what was happening was nothing short of a revolution, albeit a quiet one.
However, there is no doubt that the death of Duplessis, and the subsequent election of the Liberal Party of Jean Lesage, ushered a period of intense changes and activities, the sum total of which seemed to amount to a Revolution.
