In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Jean Martinon
Martinon spent two years in a German camp, where he wrote many compositions, such as Stalag 9 (or Musique d'exil) and Absolve Domine for men's chorus and orchestra (without violins) in memory of French musicians killed in the war.
Martinon was invited to serve as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1963.
Martinon conducted a series of contemporary concerts, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, at the University of Chicago, and he also led a baroque music festival.

Testament Reissues Jean Martinon's Prokofiev Fifth And Seventh Symphonies Review By Max Westler
The recordings Martinon made in Chicago testify to a more distinguished partnership with the orchestra than the indignity of his departure would suggest.
Martinon first came to international attention with a series of early stereo recordings for Decca, of mostly Russian repertoire: Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Shostakovich, and these two symphonies by Prokofiev.
Martinon doesn't slow down for lyric episodes; and especially in the first and third movements the restlessness and tension are pretty much unrelieved.

Decca Music Group - New Release
The French conductor and composer Jean Martinon was born in Lyons on 10 January 1910 and died in Paris on 1 March 1976.
Martinon studied in Lyons and Paris and his teachers included Roussel for composition, and Munch and Desormière for conducting.
Martinon’s repertory was broad-ranging as demonstrated in this collection which, while containing much 19th and early 20th century French music, includes works which, at the time of recording, were still “new” – such as Prokofiev Symphony No.7.

Jean Martinon and The Orchestre de Paris - Ravel's Boléro/Daphnis et Chloé/La Valse - EMI Classics Records
EMI Classics’ release of Jean Martinon and the Orchestre de Paris’; performances of Ravel’s Boléro, complete Daphnis et Chloé, and La Valse, happily, are anything but stale.
Martinon was wise to allow the sensual nature of Boléro to speak and insinuate for itself, never pushing or pulling the orchestra.
The performance has an obviousness about it; that is, Martinon conducts in such a way as to make each succeeding variation of the theme sound logically in its proper place in soundspace and time with regard to every other thematic variation.

We tend to forget that the present recordings were made within a couple of years of Martinon's death in 1976 though there is no sign of a falling off in insight or energy.
Martinon came to regret that he was so strongly associated with French music rather as Boult and Handley have been so tightly bound up with English music.
Not only is this set of compelling artistic attraction it is kind to the bank balance and also takes up only a couple of centimetres of shelf space.

Jean Martinon's five-year tenure in Chicago following Fritz Reiner's untimely death remains a controversial period in the orchestra's history, at least from a public relations perspective.
Although Martinon was widely regarded as something of a failure, I have yet to hear a recording or live broadcast that isn't terrific.
A composer himself, Martinon had a reputation for interpretive coolness, but this never should be mistaken for a lack of drama or excitement.

Classical Net Review - Martinon - Decca Recordings 1951-1960
This is one of the most enjoyable box sets in the Decca catalogue with a wide array of music under the exquisite and inimitable baton of the great Jean Martinon.
Often underrated and perhaps slightly forgotten, this French conductor was a cultured artist in the very sense of the word, bringing a refined approach to music making that is immortalized in these fabulously sounding Decca recordings.
Martinon had a penchant for Czech music and this is reflected in his boisterous performances of Dvořák's Slavonic Dances, somewhat rare recordings but again, beautifully engineered by the master Kenneth Wilkinson.

Martinon is considered by many to be one of the great French conductors of his time and a major rival to Munch and Paray.
The orchestra that Reiner built was far more to Solti’s liking than Martinon’s and the Chicagoans, whatever their considerable merits, never managed the fluid elegance that is Martinon’s hallmark.

 Schuricht / E. Kleiber / Krauss / Ferras/ Martinon
Jean Martinon took over the position of musical director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1963 after Fritz Reiner left, a difficult position to fill indeed, particularly with the vindictive Claudia Cassidy, critic of the Chicago Tribune, maliciously and constantly undermining him until his departure in 1968.
Martinon then led the French National Radio Orchestra and the Residency Orchestra in The Hague.
Martinon surely was a finer conductor than a composer; some collectors may wish to have these, and for those interested, here they are in wonderful transfers on a small private label that has provided a service for collectors with these immaculate, wide-range transfers from pristine original LPs.

Inscriptions from November 1957 reissued from the Decca originals, featuring the late Jean Martinon (1910-1976), the able composer-conductor whose estimate in France was under-rated, but whose repute in Britain and the United States was high, especially in French music and in modern works.
Martinon took his cue from Charles Munch, his mentor and professional guide, but Martinon's touch and colors were slightly more classical than Munch's penchant for colossal, romantic intensity.
Martinon's is a rather chaste, controlled reading, as is the Seventh Symphony, both in good stereo sound.

The last movement might well approach Michelangeli’s conception of the Hammerklavier, had he ever deigned to inscribe it.
The Emperor Concerto is yet another reading to savor, with its rather uncompromising, driven tempo in the opening Allegro that still manages Michelangeli and Martinon their moments of high relief.
Detractors are bound to find the bravura approach too glib for their tastes; but even the severest critic will be agog at the sheer fluency of execution and consistent sheen in the piano dynamics.

Bartók: Suites For Orchestra / Martinon, Chicago So | ArkivMusic
The Chicago Symphony's recordings of Bartók conducted by fellow-Hungarian Fritz Reiner are justly famous, but the 1967 recording of Bartók's 'Miraculous Mandarin' Suite on this disc reveals that Reiner's successor as music director in Chicago, Jean Martinon, was equally able to inspire the orchestra in this repertoire.
This ballet suite is one of the most viscerally exciting scores that Bartók wrote, and it is given a thrilling reading here, with tempos taken at a breakneck pace, especially in the chase sequence near the end.
For a final contrast, Varèse's noisy 'Arcana' is thrown in: Basically an experiment in sonority, it is brilliantly orchestrated with a huge array of percussion, and requires every bit of virtuosity Martinon and his orchestra have to offer.
