Moliere, considered by many critics to be the greatest comic dramatist of all time, was also a leading French comic actor, stage director, and dramatic theoretician of the seventeenth century.
By all reports, Moliere was a jealous husband, and the marriage was characterized by several separations and reconciliations.
Throughout his life, Moliere's life was complicated by his hypochondria, marital difficulties, the tragic death of his son, and constant attack from various sources.

Malaspina Great Books - Moliere (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin) (1622)
It is said that Moliere was soon very angry with him when he was told that Racine had secretly presented his tragedy to the company of Hetel de Bourgogne too.
Moliere reached Paris in 1658 and played at the Louvre (then for rent as a theatre) Corneille's tragedy Nicomede and the farce Le docteur amoureux (the doctor in love), with a certain success.
In 1662 Moliere moved to the Theatre du Palais-Royal, still with his Italian partners, and married Armande, that he supposed the sister of Madeleine while she really was her illegitimate daughter (born by a flirt with Duc of Modene in 1643,; when Moliere and Madeleine were starting their adventure).

In the play, the writer, Moliere, derided unnecessary godliness that he views as being a true from of hypocrisy; he did not condemn the actions of the pious people, but those who appear to be religious and, thus, are hypocrites.
Moliere used the platform of a comedic play about religious hypocrisy to show a common fault of the family structure, a structure not all unlike that of the ranks in the military.
It examines how Moliere demonstrates all of these Enlightenment values in his play and that the difference between true piety and religious hypocrisy is, of course, the main theme of "Tartuffe".

Moliere's Bio   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Moliere, whose real name was Jean Baptiste Poquelin, composed 12 of the most durable and penetratingly satirical full-length comedies of all time, some in rhyming verse, some in prose, as well as six shorter farces and comedies.
Moliere responded by incorporating some of his detractors into his comedies as buffoons and ineffectuals.
In his longer comedies, Moliere immensely refined the commedia themes and techniques, setting most of his plots in and around Paris and raising neoclassical French comedy to a plane of artistry and inventiveness never attained before or since.

Term paper on Join Jean Baptist Moliere
Jean Baptist Moliere belonged to that generation when film making had not been invented, but through the medium of theatre, his plays and dramatic performances provided rich dramatic fare – hearty and satisfying and liable to be thought provoking.
Moliere replies cynically that there is more likely to be some opposition, since that is what he usually faces with all his plays.
Moliere says that if he had his way, he would write and produce only tragedies because that is what comes most naturally to him.

 Fictionwise eBooks: Jean-Baptiste Moliere
One of Moliere's most popular plays, Tartuffe, written in 1669, tells the story of Orgon, a rich bourgeois who has become a prude and bigot in his middle age.
Perhaps Moliere wished not only that the general public should be prepared to find instructions and warnings for married men, but also that they who were wont to regard the theatre as injurious, or at best trivial, should know that he professed to educate, as well as to entertain.
Moliere began in The Pretentious Young Ladies to paint men and women as they are; to make living characters and existing manners the ground-work of his plays.

Moliere’s company gained enough of a reputation that eventually he was able to get an invitation to play for the King.
Moliere would go on to write and often star in productions of “The School for Husbands,” “The School for Wives,” “The Misanthrope,” “The Doctor in Spite of Himself,” “Tartuffe,” “The Miser,” and “The Imaginary Invalid.” While performing in the lead in a production of “The Imaginary Invalid”, Moliere developed a hemorrhage.

 Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632 - 1687) - Find A Grave Memorial
His greatest contributions were for the theatre, beginning with a group of comedy-ballets he created in collaboration with Moliere.
Today Moliere's texts are usually staged without the music, but Lully's score for "Le bourgeois gentilhomme" (1670) is probably his best-known.
Remembering that his friend Moliere had been denied a Catholic burial because of his unrepentant involvement with the theatre, Lully avoided a similar fate by agreeing to destroy, in the presence of a priest, all of his theatre scores.

Born on December 20, 1639, Jean Racine was orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandmother, Marie des Moulins, who took the boy with her to the convent of Port-Royal des Champs near Paris after she was widowed.
Although Racine's next play, Andromache (1667), was also originally produced by Moliere's troupe, Racine was unhappy with the production and gave the text to the Bourgogne company--who was more skilled at tragedy--for a second production.
After seducing the young actress, Racine convinced her to leave Moliere's troupe and join him at the Hôtel de Bourgogne.
