TIME INTERNATIONAL: Who Was Jean Moulin? --PAGE 1-- December 14, 1998
When the ashes of Jean Moulin were enshrined in the Paris Pantheon in 1964, the revered Resistance leader and martyr of the anti-Nazi struggle became the official personification of the covert French fight against German occupation during World War II.
That is precisely what has happened with the publication of two new Moulin biographies: Jacques Baynac's The Secrets of the Jean Moulin Affair and The Lives and Deaths of Jean Moulin by the respected historian Pierre Pean.
Pean's book confirms the orthodox view that Moulin was sold out to the SS by Resistance fighter Rene Hardy, the member of the "Combat" faction that hated De Gaulle and resented his command.

Perceptions between the French and their World War II allies on the size and importance of the Resistance still differ greatly.
Neither, however, definitively solves the mystery of how the Nazis were able to learn Moulin's identity and order his arrest by Klaus Barbie, the Lyon-area Gestapo chief, nor reveal details of Moulin's torture and death in early July.
Those enigmas, however, help reinforce Moulin's mythic stature in France--and provide factual gray areas in his life that allow everyone to imagine him according to their own perceptions of Resistance France.

In the circumstances it is little wonder that Moulin worked closely with Communists yet this author seems to to think that makes him a fellow-traveller or worse, a Soviet spy.
This ridiculous argument is maintained even after Marnham recounts how Moulin brow beat the CP into accepting the leadership of De Gaulle.
Moulin was a "creation" of de Gaulle's and Marnham uses excellent historical references to pinpoint as much as is known about Moulin to humanize him and demystify the existing French preoccupation with his place in the Resistance movement.
