Jean Ritchie was born December 8, 1922, in Viper, Kentucky, the youngest of Abigail and Balis Ritchie's fourteen children.
When Jean was five her father showed her how to play the family's fl dulcimer, even though she had been sneaking behind the sofa and softly strumming the strings without his knowledge.
In 1950 Jean was married to photographer George Pickow and later that year signed a contract with Elektra Records which led to the 10-inch LP Jean Ritchie Singing Traditional Songs of Her Kentucky Mountain Family that was issued in 1952.

Issued, originally, on two Folkways LPs, Jean Ritchie - ballads from her appalachian family tradition is a stunning collection of sixteen Child ballads sung by one of the most outstanding singers ever to emerge from the Appalachian singing tradition.
Jean's main source for the ballads were her father, Balis W Ritchie (b.1869), her mother, Abigail Hall Ritchie (b.1877) and 'Uncle' Jason Ritchie, who was actually one of Balis Ritchie's first cousins.
It comes as no surprise to read that Jean Ritchie was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship Award from the National Endowment for the Arts, 'in recognition of her significant contribution to folk and traditional arts'.

Jean Ritchie was the fourteenth and last child in a family in which education and music were important.
In 1952 Jean Ritchie received a Fulbright Scholarship, and she and her husband George Pickow traveled the European countryside collecting songs related to her own family songs, songs that her ancestors brought with them to the mountains of Kentucky from their home in the hills of Scotland.
Despite the fact that she has lived in Port Washington, New York for nearly 50 years, Jean Ritchie is perhaps the most well-known of traditional singers from Kentucky and has stayed true to the roots of her musical family all her life.

Jean Ritchie was born into a large and musical family in Viper, Kentucky in 1922.
The Ritchie family was very much a part of the Appalachian folk tradition, and had committed over 300 songs (including hymns, traditional love songs, ballads, children's game songs, etc.) to its collective memory, a tradition that Ritchie has drawn on (as well as preserved and maintained) for the entire length of her performing career.
After hearing some casually recorded songs by Ritchie, Jac Holzman, who was just starting up Elektra Records, signed her to the label, eventually releasing three albums, Jean Ritchie Sings (1952), Songs of Her Kentucky Mountain Family (1957) and A Time for Singing (1962) at the height of the folk revival.
