Rochefort has been a staple of the mainstream French cinema for over three decades, first as a character player and second lead in the late 1950s and 60s, a leading man since the 70s and an international star since the 80s.
Rochefort shone as the second lead in Bertrand Tavernier's feature directorial debut, "L'Horloger de St. Paul/The Watchmaker of St Paul" (1973), as the seemingly sympathetic police inspector who befriends the shaken father (Philippe Noiret) of an accused murderer.
Rochefort made his US film debut in "Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?" (1978), but most of his French and European projects never made it to the US.

Bio for Jean Rochefort on MSN Movies
Though he is not quite the international icon that his erstwhile acting classmate and occasional co-star Jean-Paul Belmondo is, Jean Rochefort has been a fixture of French cinema for over four decades.
Among his prolific output, Rochefort played second banana to Belmondo in the adventure yarn Cartouche (1962), starred in the gangster movie Symphonie Pour un Massacre (1963) and the popular costume romance series Angelique Marquise des Anges (1964), Angelique et le Roi (1965), and Merveilleuse Angelique (1965).
Along with his Leconte films, Rochefort stayed busy throughout the 1990s, appearing in such movies as Robert Altman's all-star fashion fiasco Ready to Wear (1994), a TV miniseries of The Count of Monte Cristo (1998), and the biopic Rembrandt (1999).

Rochefort and Hallyday not only explore the thirst of their characters for a completely different fate, but also provide an affecting portrait of the mysterious nature of friendship, which so often unfolds in the face of envy and regret yet brings even the most disparate hearts and minds together in surprising ways.
Rochefort was immediately drawn to the film’s themes of reflecting back on life and facing one’s regrets and lost dreams, which at the age of 72 held tremendous appeal for him.
Although Hallyday and Rochefort are the center of attention in Man on the Train, one other character plays a pivotal role in their unfolding friendship: Manesquier’s mistress, Viviane, who is played by Isabelle Petit-Jacques, previously seen in Leconte’s Girl on the Bridge and Ridicule.
