Jean Stapleton (born Jeanne Murray on January 19, 1923 in New York City) is an American actress of stage, television and film.
Jean was offered a role in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but declined because it coincided with the production of the All in the Family pilot.
Stapleton is not related to Maureen Stapleton; she acquired her professional name of Jean Stapleton as many other actors have done, by using her mother's maiden name.

From her debut in summer stock in 1941 through the 40s, 50s and 60s, Stapleton was a stage performer, not only on Broadway, but also in repertory theaters and at the Totem Pole Playhouse, the summer theater she started in 1958 with her husband, William Putch.
Stapleton originated role in the stage musicals "Damn Yankees" and "Bells Are Ringing" which she reprised for the feature film versions in 1958 and 1960 respectively.
In 1984, Stapleton was offered the lead role in a proposed CBS series about a teacher turned mystery writer, but despite announcements in trade publications, she turned down "Murder, She Wrote".

Jean Stapleton has been performing her one-person show about Eleanor Roosevelt around the country for some time, at such theatres at Hartford Stage and San Francisco's Marines Theatre.
The Cape Playhouse of Dennis, MA, where Stapleton will perform on Aug. 6, is advertising Eleanor: First Lady of the World as "Pre-Broadway." A spokesman for the playhouse said Philip Langner would produce and the show would hit Broadway "sometime next season," meaning 2000-2001.
Stapleton performed the solo show in Hartford Stages' "Summer Stage" series last August, where it proved a hit.
