Stereotactic navigation, Jean Talairach, and I.
This is not meant to be a comprehensive review of the work of Jean Talairach and his associates at the Centre Hospitalier Ste.
Talairach's contributions in the development of stereotactic instrumentation and methods, cerebral anatomy, neurophysiology, epilepsy, stereotactic biopsy and interstitial irradiation of tumors, radionuclide ablation of the pituitary gland, and surgical treatment of pain, movement disorders, and psychiatric illnesses are legend.
Talairach is a creative pioneer who, from the time he arrived at Ste.

Jean Talairach - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jean Talairach was a neurosurgeon who practiced at the Centre Hospitalier Ste.
Among his contributions to science and applied medicine is the Talairach coordinate system of the human brain, which is used to describe the location of brain structures independent from individual differences in the size and overall shape of the brain.
One disadvantage of the Talairach coordinate atlas is the approximate method of labeling a tissue-specific Brodmann area based on gross visual inspection rather than histological examination.

Jean Talairach in Paris was aware of the work of Spiegel and Wycis.
The Talairach system consisted of a basic unit that was fixed to the skull and a double grid that attached to that base unit.
In addition, the Talairach frame was unique in that it could be removed and replaced on the patient in precisely the same position.

Jean (François Marie) AICARDI was born in 1926 and is a native of Rambouillet, France.
Jean Aicardi was among the first to be concerned with epilepsy in the first year of a child's life, particularly infantile spasms.
From the mid 1950s until the mid 1970s, Gilles Lyon, Jean Aicardi, Stéphane Thieffry, and Michel Arthuis were associated with the same service in Paris and had almost a complete monopoly on pediatric neurology in France.

Jean Aicardi - Pediatric Neurology Paris
He first met Gastaut, as well as Joseph Roger, in 1960 in Marseilles on the occasion of a symposium on infantile spasms.
Their ideas, as well as those of Collette Dreyfus-Brisac, a pionneer in the field of electroencephalography in childhood, and Jean Bancaud, who, together with Jean Talairach and their coworkers, developed stereoelectroencephalography and stereotactic neurosurgery of epilepsy, were to play a significant part in the development of Aicardi's thinking in the field of epileptology.
As early as 1957, he made the distinction between cryptogenic and symptomatic forms of infantile spasms, a distinction that has important prognostic implications (Thieffry and Aicardi, 1959).

Talairach is the coordinate system and space for the human brain defined in the book by Jean Talairach and Pierre Tournoux: Co-planar Stereotaxic Atlas of the Human Brain from 1988.
The so-called MNI-space is slightly different from the original Talairach space, - it is a bit larger.
The coordinates in the Brede database is usually reported with reference to the original Talairach space.

Jean BANCAUD was born on the 1st of octobre 1921 in Bourganeuf, Creuse, France.
His youth was marked by the 2nd World War during which he engaged himself as a volunteer in the french Resistance.
In very close collaboration with Professor Jean Talairach, neurosurgeon, he conceived and developped, at the Sainte-Anne Hospital in Paris, a pioneering method for the stereotactic exploration of the epilepsies (stereo-electro-encephalography, SEEG).

Following the original descriptions of stereotactic instruments by Spiegel and Wycis, Leksell, and Talairach, others worldwide saw the merits in stereotactic guidance.
In Germany, Riechert and Wolff devised a device similar to that described by Kirschner.
The Talairach frame is another example of a simple orthogonal system: probes are inserted to a measured depth through coaxial holes in a grid that is mounted on a base plate orthogonal to the x or y axes.

One of the first modern brain atlases was developed by French neuroscientist Jean Talairach and collaborators, who began their work in the 1950s, using a coordinate system based on two identifiable structures in the midplane of the brain, the anterior and posterior commissures.
Today's digital brain atlases are compilations of views and sections of brains describable in precise mathematical terms with respect to an explicit coordinate system, generally derived from the Talairach system.
With a brain atlas based on one subject as the template, brain-warping algorithms elastically deform the scan of a target brain until the brain or brain structures are in registration with the template.
