Jean Titelouze - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Titelouze came to Rouen at the age of 20, and he spent his whole life there.
He became organist at Saint Jean church in 1585, then titular organist of the cathedral in 1588.
This instrument was, at this time, one of the most brilliant ones in France, so we may assume that Titelouze, only 25 years old at the time, was a very good musician.

French Organs and Organ Music of the 17th Century   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Titelouze is considered the first significant composer of organ music in France and a transitional figure in the development of a distinctive organ literature for the French Baroque.
By 1585 he had entered the priesthood and was the substitute organist at the cathedral at St.Omer, and in 1588 he became the organist at St.Jean (his improvisational skills being considerably superior to that of the other candidates), a post he held until his death.
Titelouze was also noted as an expert consultant in organ construction, not to mention a writer and poet.

 [No title]
In France, the keyboardist Jean Titelouze built a 19-tone equal-tempered harpsichord in the 17th century: his work is mentioned by Mersenne.
Since violins, violas, celli, etc., tend toward Pythagorean intonation and since their fifths are tuned just (701.955 cent fifths versus the 694.73684 cent fifths of 19-tone equal temperament or 1/3 comma meantone, whichever description you prefer) this was tantamount to suggesting that different tunings be combined.
Titelouze' s ideas were thought radical at the time: and he himself thought of 19 as a sort of expanded 1/3-comma meantone.

His organ works were published in two volumes, one of settings of plainsong hymns, the other of plainsong magnificats: alternate verses only are set, the intermediate ones being supplied in plainsong by a priest or choir.
It was, however, only after Titelouze that the art of French registration settled into the immediately recognisable patterns which the other composers in this section of the programme illustrate.
Such patterns are the Grand Jeu, which demonstrates the reed stops; the Plein Jeu, which shows off the Mixtures; the pieces with a solo stop (such as the Cromorne) or combination of stops (such as the Cornet or Tierce), perhaps 'en taille' (in the tenor part).

TITELOUZE Hymns HCD9037 []: Classical Reviews- April 2002 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
This disc consists of organ verses and hymns composed on plainsong melodies by one of the most extraordinary musicians of renaissance France, Jean Titelouze.
A typical Titelouze composition is exemplified by the first work on the CD, the hymn ‘Ave Maris Stella’: Opening plainsong intonation, one line of text followed by verse on the organ with plainchant in the bass in long notes.
But whereas Monteverdi is most definitely early baroque in sound, Titelouze remains anchored in the renaissance, indeed for me, the early renaissance when figures like John Redford and William Blithemann were active (c.1530) and writing organ masses.

The contacts made as a result of this were far-reaching: that other great Flemish organ-building family, the Langhedulls, are implicated in the story, and personally I have a romantic notion that Titelouze was responsible for introducing the young French builder Valerin de HÈman to Crespin Carlier's daughter Elizabeth.
From that union hangs a tale which involves the Scotsman William Leslie and perhaps even the Howe and Dallam families, but for this series of links there is no documentary evidence whatever (I know that my critics are ready to denounce my view of this period as hopelessly rose-tinted).
The indication of a line of descent from Titelouze is, of course, fancy on my part.
