 Nattiez, Jean-Jacques
Elsewhere, Nattiez states that "the task of semiology is to identify interpretants according to the three poles of the tripartition, and to establish their relationship to one another" (29).
Nattiez believes that Blacking's famous "deep structures", despite the connotation of the phrase, are relevant to the poietic and not the immanent level.
Nattiez discusses the particular merits and deficiencies of each analysis, and finally presents his own preferred reading of the chord while not insisting that it is the only "right" reading.

 SRB Archives 3(1)
Nattiez adopts a lineage from Cassirer in sketching his notion of the symbolic and sees his own insistence on the symbolic as establishing a kind of opposition to semiotics as generally practiced.
Nattiez' insistence that the perceiver does not "receive" the music's message but must rather "reconstruct" it is a valuable corrective, but in abandoning the question of communication, he may have traded away the whole store.
Nattiez is insistent that semiotics might include but can not replace aesthetics, but the ethnological and historical expansion of musical horizons which begs for a revision of our musicological framework is equally unsettling for the discipline of musical aesthetics.

 mto.96.2.1.mccreles.rev
As Nattiez suggests, it is difficult not to see here a confluence of the real Wagner, oppressed in Paris (in his own view) by Meyerbeer, and his theoretical musings about the male poet and the female musician, all wrapped into a single (and, it must be admitted, crudely autobiographical) dramatic scenario.
So Nattiez ends up abandoning the analogy (between Wagner's theories and his works) that has guided the book thus far (though he does not explicitly say that he is doing so), and sees in *Parsifal* what amounts to an *Aufhebung* of androgyny to the level of culture itself.
And Nattiez's attack on structuralist interpretation, while perhaps justifiable in its own right, is just one part of a gratuitous and curious polemic that weighs down the entire last part of the book.

 The Remembrance of Things Past
Nattiez knows full well that the subject of Proust and music has been discussed before, and he gives a generous and judicious survey of his predecessors' contributions in his opening pages in order to justify one more study.
Nattiez's study if not only a close reading of Proust's inexhaustible text (and it must be stressed that one cannot close a book like this without marvelling anew at the astonishing imaginative coherence of Proust's novel, from which one can tease out so many consistent and suggestive patterns); it also touches on genetic questions.
Nattiez never reduces the text to the elements that went into its creation, but he does show very cleverly how a long meditation on Wagner contributed to the stages Proust delineates in the novel (chapter 2).

 Nattiez, Jean-Jacques
In 1970, Nattiez became a professor at the University of Montreal, first at the departments of linguistics and French studies, and then at the Faculty of Music where he began to teach musicology in 1972.
Nattiez' book Tétralogies 'Wagner, Boulez, Chéreau,' essai sur l'infidélité, released in 1983, dealt with performance specifics in Wagner's music, whereas his Wagner androgyne (1990) focused on the relationship between poetry and music in the composer's operas.
Recipient of a Killam grant of the Canada Council, Nattiez was elected member of the Royal Society of Canada in 1988.

 RAUNO REMME:
Jean-Jacques Nattiez connected Ruwet's "machine" with the idea of the neutral level of music, suggested by Jean Molino.
According to Molino and Nattiez it is the level of music which is eliminated from the intentions and activities of a composer creating a work, as well as from the activities of a listener, their perceptions and interpretations.
Monelle finds Nattiez's third segmentation of Debussy's Syrinx (not included here) being the most complex and novel: instead of placing together units which are similar to each other he examines in which respect do units differ from each other.

Powell's Books - Wagner Androgyne by Jean Jacque Nattiez
So argues Jean-Jacques Nattiez in this richly insightful work, where he draws from semiology, music criticism, and psychoanalysis to explore such topics as Wagner's theories of music drama, his anti-Semitism, and his psyche.
"Nattiez's study--an exposition of the aesthetic of androgyny, its place in nineteenth-century thought, and its particular manifestation in Wagner's oeuvre--is breathtaking in the depth of its research and thoroughly persuasive in the connections it traces in the history of ideas.
Nattiez is especially successful in describing the intellectual world in which Wagner worked.

Music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the opinion of Jean-Jacques Nattiez (1990), "in the last analysis, it is a human being who decides what is and is not musical, even when the sound is not of human origin.
It is said to be an art, or form of entertainment, it is also called total social fact by Jean Molino (1975: 37), it is also often defined by contrast with noise or speech.
According to Nattiez, Cage, Kagel, Schnebel, and others, "now perceive them[certain of their pieces] (even if they do not say so publicly) as a way of "speaking" in music about music, in the second degree, as it were, to expose or denounce the institutional aspect of music's functioning." (p.43)

Eleven ways of looking at Density 21.5
Recent studies by Martin Gumbel, James Tenney, Jean-Jacques Nattiez, Jonathan W. Bernard, and Marc Wilkinson are examined to determine the extent to which interpretational considerations are used in analysis, and to identify the interpretational insights that these analyses yield.

P Tagg: What use is a museme? The cas of anguish
These parallels were criticised by such musicologists as Nattiez (1975, 1987), Imberty (1976, 1979), Lerdahl & Jackendoff (1977) and Keiler (1978) who drew attention to differences between musical and linguistic semiosis.
This article does not aim to solve the mystery of what constitutes a minimal unit of musical meaning, but it is clear that such minimal units of musical meaning, if they exist, must be considered as paradigmatic as well as syntagmatic phenomena (Nattiez, 1975).
It would, however, be premature at this stage of research —and an act of intellectual alchemy— to try and distill the theoretical essence of ‘The Museme’ without first providing concrete examples of how the construction (poïesis) and reception (esthesis) of different individual musical structures are demonstrably linked within the same general music culture.

Title IV: Traité des objets musicaux dix ans après
It includes Schaeffer's own evaluation, contributions by various members of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales and two articles by Jean-Jacques Nattiez.
Nattiez's commentary on the semiological status of Schaeffer's Sound Object is worth of note, even if, in the meantime, the prestige of Schaeffer's work has considerably waxed, while that of music semiologies has somewhat waned.
Issued ten years after the publication of Schaeffer's main musicological opus, this anthology was conceived as an assessment of Traité 's impact -- or lack thereof -- upon contemporary thinking.

New Perspectives in Ethnomusicology: A Critical Survey
NATTIEZ, Jean-Jacques: Fondements d'une sémiologie de la musique.
The semiology inspired by Saussure's work in linguistics was developed into a fairly sophisticated, if limited, tool for musical analysis (Boilès 1982, Nattiez 1975).
For a while, semiotics seemed to offer promise of a release from the barrenness of structuralism.

Editorial: If La Scena Musicale didn't exist, it would have to be invented
wrote musicologist Jean-Jacques Nattiez in a letter supporting La Scena Musicale 's request in December 2002 to the Canada Council and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) to change their eligibility rules so that our funding application for the print magazine could be judged by a review committee.
It is this kind of enthusiastic support and belief in our products that motivates our dedicated team of staff and volunteers to continued excellence.

Boulez-Cage Correspondence; Author: Nattiez, Jean-Jacques; Editor: Samuels, Robert; Hardcover
This correspondence, together with a further letter from 1962 and various other relevant documents, have been edited by Jean-Jacques Nattiez and appear here for the first time completely in English.
Atthe time Cage and Boulez were great friends and these amicable letters reflect their differing ideas on the course new music should take.
Between May 1949 and August 1954 the composers Pierre Boulez and John Cage exchanged a series of remarkable letters which reflect on their own music and the music and culture of the time.
