Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier ( 21 February 1815 - 21 January 1891) was a leading French Classicist painter and sculptor famous for his depictions of Napoleon, his armies and military themes.
His son, Jean Charles Meissonier, also a painter, was his father's pupil, and was admitted to the Legion of Honour in 1889.
Meissonier was an admirable draughtsman upon wood, his illustrations to Les Conies Remois (engraved by Lavoignat), to Lamartine's Fall of an Angel to Paul and Virginia, and to The French Painted by Themselves being among the best known.

 Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier
By 1840 Meissonier was recognized as a painter of small, remarkably accurate historical genre scenes, reminiscent of the Dutch little masters of the seventeenth century.
In 1861, Meissonier was elected to the Institut, of which he became President in 1876.
A prolific and hugely successful artist in his own life time, Meissonier is best remembered today for his paintings glorifying Napoleon and the Napoleonic legend.

 UCR/CMP: Eadweard Muybridge
French painter Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier was so impressed with the works of Muybridge, he threw a reception in his elegant Paris home, as well.
Meissonier gathered together the most famous and influential painters and critics of the official art establishment of that time, inspiring many artists to reconsider phases of the horse's gait and to contemplate movement beyond the perception of the human eye.
Muybridge had given an exhibition ofhis crucial experiments to an audience of internationally renowned scientists in the home of the physiologist, Marey.

 Jean-Louis-Ernest-Meissonier - Biography
The smooth, hard surface of a panel particularly suited Meissonier's meticulous technique, as it had suited the Dutch seventeenth-century masters whom he so much admired.
how often do you hear in the sale-room, "That's a Meissonier, there are additions" '."I often make additions to my pictures.

Biography of MEISSONIER, Jean-Louis-Ernest in the Web Gallery of Art
Meissonier did his best work when he was at his least pretentious.
There are large collections of Meissonier's work in the Musée d'Orsay and in the Wallace Collection, London.
He was immense1y successful with his trite and nigglingly detailed historical paintings and historical genre pieces (particularly scenes from the Napoleonic campaigns) and from the 1840s received the highest official honours, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour - he was the first painter to win this award.

Military Art by Louis Ernest Meissonier
Military art prints of Napoleon and his armies by French artist Louis Ernest Meissonier, published by Cranston Fine Arts.
Inspired by what he witnesses, Meissonier began to paint military scenes from the war such as The Emperor at Solferino, which was shown at the 1864 Salon, and The Emperor and his staff.
Inspired by the first Napoleon, Meissonier developed the idea of creating a cycle of pictures dramatising the great soldier from his rise to his fall.

 Meissonier
Although he was briefly a student of Jules Potier (1796—1865) and Léon Cogniet, Meissonier was mainly self-taught and gained experience by designing wood-engravings for book illustrations.
Such images, typically measuring 60*90 mm and composed of still-life motifs (books or drapery cascading from a chest, intricately arranged and exhaustively detailed), helped form the style for which Meissonier became famous as a painter.
These included Léon Curmer’s celebrated edition of J.-H. Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s Paul et Virginie (Paris, 1838), the series Les Français peints par eux-mêmes (Paris, 1840—42) and Louis de Chevigné’s Les Contes rémois (Paris, 1858).

Then, in 1859 Meissonier was commissioned to paint the "Battle of Solferino" (now in the Louvre).
For many years Meissonier had to earn his living by illustrating novels from an earlier time.
This was the beginning of a new series of works, which date from the Second Empire, and in which the artist undertook to celebrate the glories of the first Empire.
