 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Flanders
Jeanne (1205-1244) administered the counties wisely during her husband's captivity, and after his death she increased the liberties of the communes to counteract the influence of the nobility--a policy which was followed by her sister Margaret, who succeeded her in 1244.
Flanders then received a French governor, but the tyranny of the French soon brought about an insurrection, in the course of which some 3000 French were slaughtered in Bruges, and at the call of the two patriots, de Coninck and Breydel, the whole country rose in arms.
Philip was succeeded by Charles the Bold (1467-1477), the marriage of whose daughter to Maximilian, Archduke of Austria, brought Flanders with the rest of the Low Countries under the rule of the House of Hapsburg in 1477.

Baldwin was the son of Baldwin V of Hainault, and Margaret, sister of Philip of Alsace, count of Flanders.
Baldwin took possession of a much-reduced Flanders, for his uncle had given a large chunk, including Artois, as dowry to Baldwin's sister Elizabeth (also known as Isabelle) on her marriage to King Philip II of France, and another significant piece to his own wife.
The eight years of Baldwin's rule in Flanders were dominated by his attempts to recover some of this land, culminating in January 1200 in the Treaty of Péronne, in which Philip returned most of Artois.

The union of Flanders and Hainault comes to an end when the Countess Margaret of Flanders leaves Hainault to the son of her first husband, Burchard of Avesnes, and Flanders to the son of her second husband, William of Dampierre.
This is at the end of the House of Capet, but Jeanne and Philip actually have a number of daughters, through whom the County of Burgundy passes; and since they marry Dukes of Burgundy and Counts of Flanders, the fateful combination of the Duchy of Burgundy with the Counties of Flanders and Burgundy arises.

Using his own lands and Baldwin's daughter to further his schemes, Philip of Flanders offered Baldwin the prospect of inheriting Flanders in right of his wife, and in return demanded Baldwin's assent to his plan for dowering Isabelle with Artois to place her on the French throne.
Isabelle's dowry was the means to that end: she would inherit Artois when Philip of Flanders died, though its lands and towns would return to Flanders should she, or any heir she might have, die childless (a standard escape clause).
This letter is preserved in a Latin copy in a collection of Philip's correspondence with Isabelle's uncle of Flanders, and probably owes its survival to her relationship with the latter.
