In 1956, the critical response to Jedda was almost universally favourable, both as a piece of cinema and to its portrayal of Territory life and "the Aboriginal problem".
For Johnston, Jedda was remarkable because the natives are not relegated to the romantic backdrop.
More in keeping with the current mood were the portrait plates of Tudawali and the infant Jedda that Joan Strack submitted for the Archibald Prize in 1954 as part of her determination to lift the status of Aborigines.

Strange Horizons Reviews: Considering The Ordinary: A Review of Grimsley's The Ordinary, reviewed by Steve Berman
After years of study and trade with the locals, Jedda has become an expert on Irion languages and, as the novel opens, she is part of a seemingly diplomatic contingent from Senal to meet with Malin, the fabled ruler of Irion.
Jedda quickly discovers though that the mission actually is a plot to drive the two realms to war; the oligarchs from Senal are confident that advanced technology can easily conquer and colonize "backwards" Irion, which has much-needed resources.
Jedda remains unsure if she was left behind as a guest or prisoner and soon finds herself integral in the plans of the wizards of Irion.

Jedda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jedda (1955) was the last movie made by the Australian filmmaker Charles Chauvel.
Jedda is seen by some as an influential film in early Australian cinema, as it set a standard for future Australian films to seek, and had a greater international impact than previous Australian films, especially during a time when Hollywood films were dominating the Australian cinema.
The Jedda of the title is a half-white/half Aboriginal girl was born an orphan on the cattle tracks in the Northern Territory and brought to the McMann family to be taken by one of the Aboriginal women who worked on the cattle station there.

 Chauvel's Jedda led the way - Film - www.theage.com.au
Jedda was filmed in arduous conditions in central Australia from mid-1953 (the stirring finale was refilmed near the Blue Mountains in NSW when the original footage was destroyed in a plane crash) and the transfer to digital video format was not without similar challenges.
Jedda was a commercial and critical success when it was released in Australia in 1955, although in most other countries it was seen in a severely truncated version.
Jedda never lost its place in the pantheon, though its influence and importance has been magnified and re-evaluated in the wake of the 1980s screen culture movement and Tracey Moffatt's much acclaimed 1989 short film Night Cries: A Rural Tragedy, which imagines what might have been had Jedda survived and looked after her white stepmother.
