Jozef Adriaan Geeraerts was born on February 23, 1930 in Antwerpen, as an only child of Frans Geeraerts (May 29, 1904), first sailor, later garage holder and owner of a taxi company, and Anna van der Heiden (November 15, 1904), needlewoman and owner of a clothing shop.
Geeraerts, who realises the uselessness of a further stay, follows the others in August and arrives upset in Belgium, where his family already arrived some months ago.
Nowadays Jef Geeraerts uses his time almost exclusively with writing, traveling and especially with his new and only wife Eleonore, which he married in 1978.

Since then Geeraerts has devoted himself to crime novels, but has never renounced his roots, as is evident in the charming novel Nachtvogels (Night Birds, 1994).
Clearly, Geeraerts is trying to point up the present state of the Belgian judicial system, by focusing on the personal lives of the various characters.
The novel revolves around this flmail, which is a guarantee of excitement and suspense: Geeraerts shows us what life is like in the highest circles, where corruption, paranoia and cynicism are rife.

 The Memory of a Killer
This is strange because Geeraerts writes powerful and dynamic detective characters, through which he shows a real flair for the visual and the cinematic.
If Geeraerts was not Flemish, his stories about tormented contract killers’ corrupt power games and smart sleuths might already have been filmed by Michael Mann, Christopher Nolan, David Fincher or John Woo.
May THE MEMORY OF A KILLER be the first in a long succession of films of Geeraerts thrillers, because after a few days of shooting it was clear for me: this is a world that has stayed hidden much too long from cinema audiences and thriller buffs.

 The Memory of a Killer
Jef Geeraerts began his writing career as an editor with the Flemish magazine Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift.
Geeraerts somehow uses this part of his oeuvre as an emancipation therapy from the mental traumas caused by his education, marriage and colonial period.
In 1972, Geeraerts published an erotic novel under the pseudonym ‘ClausTrum’.

 Babelguides: Gangrene
Never a dull moment in Jef Geeraerts’ Gangrene, a breathless, violent, wildly erotic romp through the final years of what, until 30 June 1960, was the Belgian Congo.
While some praised its hard-boiled style, which even won Geeraerts a literary prize, a judge had it impounded for pornography and racism and questions were asked about it in parliament.

Looy from a novel by Jef Geeraerts, the story takes place in 1995, in Antwerp, beginning with a showdown between the cop, Eric (Koen De Bouw), and a pimp selling his daughter for sex.
Child prostitution is only one part of a puzzle that encompasses a range of good guys and bad, including the hit man, Angelo Ledda (Jan Decleir), whose sense of morality and world weariness seem straight out of a Jean-Pierre Melville film.

The Seattle Times: Movies: A killer's mind betrays him while his heart redeems him
Directed by Erik Van Looy, from a screenplay by Van Looy and Carl Joos, based on the novel "The Alzheimer Case" by Jef Geeraerts.
Ledda's condition is more of a gimmick than a medically authentic plot point, but as Ledda tracks his quarry with hand-written reminders on his arm (echoes of "Memento"), Decleir is so commanding in the role that it's easy to dismiss the film's generic trappings.
But you don't have to be familiar with those headlines (or the popular novels of Jef Geeraerts) to appreciate Van Looy's colorful style and ominous atmosphere of threats from above.

The police/criminal side of the plot could be from a novel by Ed McBain or Nicholas Freeling; the psychological side could be from Georges Simenon.
The movie is based on the novel The Alzheimer Case by the Belgian writer Jef Geeraerts, which unthreads a plot involving buried perversion and aristocratic hauteur, contrasting it with the declining years of this hard-working professional man, the contract killer.
Koen De Bouw plays Eric Vincke, the 40ish cop assigned to the original child prostitution case; he follows the thread as it leads to powerful people and stays on the case in defiance of his superiors.

The Memory of a Killer (2005)
Moderately intriguing in its depiction of a veteran assassin suffering from Alzheimer's, this solidly crafted and well-acted film is nonetheless an exercise in predictability from director/co-screenwriter Erik Van Looy.
Adapted from one of a series of Geeraerts' novels featuring Antwerp police detectives Eric Vincke (Koen De Bouw) and Freddy Verstufyft (Werner De Smedt), the film opens with the partners busting a father for pimping his 12-year-old daughter.
Whereas Vincke is the ultra-contained intellectual, his partner is an impulsive extrovert of the "shoot first, ask questions later" school of police work.

A Belgian import with a nifty premise, "The Memory of a Killer" is an intriguing policier about an aging hit man in the early stages of Alzheimer's who has a score to settle before dementia sets in.
Thanks to Erik Van Looy's potent direction and solid performances, that setup pays off handsomely, marking the first time a work by acclaimed Flemish detective novelist Jef Geeraerts has been brought to the screen.
It likely won't be the last either, since Focus Features has bought the English-language remake rights and the vehicle would be a no-brainer for a De Niro or a Dennis Hopper, or even a James Caan or Anthony Hopkins.

Reeling: the Movie Review Show's review of The Memory of a Killer (De Zaak Alzheimer)
The tricky case has an additional complication - Ledda is suffering the onslaught of Alzheimer's disease and Vincke finds himself grasping at "The Memory of a Killer."
Jef Geeraerts' twenty year-old novel, "The Alzheimer Case" (the film's literally translated and far catchier title), is one of a series of detective stories featuring DCI Vincke and his right hand man Freddy Verstuyft (Werner De Smedt, "Everybody's Famous!"), so it appears that director Erik Van Looy may have a series on his hands.
If this first adaptation (screenplay by Carl Joos) is any indication, that would be a good thing, as "The Memory of a Killer" is a dense story involving sex, corruption and politics that is populated with intriguing characters all well played by this classy ensemble.

BostonHerald.com - Movie Reviews: `Memory of a Killer' an unforgettable tale
I can't be the only person also wondering if we can look forward to an American version of this story with Clint Eastwood.
The film references a recent Belgian pedophile scandal and is notably based on a series of Vincke and Verstuyft novels by veteran Belgian author Jef Geeraerts, whose work director Erik Van Looy suggests would appeal to such American filmmakers as Michael Mann, ChristopherNolan and David Fincher.
For his part, Van Looy has done a marvelous job bringing Geeraerts' detectives and the dying, seminoble hit man to life and may indeed inspire a Geeraerts buying spree among Hollywood producers looking for new, exciting material.

He senses that Angelo could be useful, while young cop Freddy (Werner De Smedt) just wants to catch him.
Directed by Erik Van Looy and based on a novel by Jef Geeraerts, "The Memory of a Killer" is a compelling and complex thriller that doesn't hero-worship the bad guy but gives him a kind of integrity.
The contrast of good and bad cops and good and bad killers provides a rich foundation, and Decleir and De Bouw give terrific performances.
