Jeff Davis County, Georgia was created in 1905 and named in honor of the President of the Confederate States of America who also served as congressman, senator and Secretary of War of the United States of America.
When the county commissioners decided to put a much needed parking area on this new property rather than build additional buildings, the Appling Grays Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp #918 approached them with the proposal to erect a monument to the namesake of the county.
In addition all contributors will be memorialized by a permanent record of their names in the official Courthouse Records of Jeff Davis County, presentation of a certificate acknowledging their status as a contributor and the inclusion of their name upon a roll of honor placed in a time capsule within the monument its self.
