Jeff Mangum: Live at Jittery Joe's: Pitchfork Record Review
This is Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum spinning his unique, beautifully tangled web of visceral flesh imagery, odes to Anne Frank, and cryptic, vivid storytelling.
Of course, the true brilliance of Jeff Mangum is that everything he sings sounds profound and beautiful.
Very dark and difficult to make out, Mangum's face appears as little more than a shadow, writhing in time with the alarmingly affecting words he sings-- almost as if the words are being driven by an intangible force.

 Neutral Milk Hotel
Mangum has rarely stayed still long enough in the past three or four years to hold a stable line-up together anyway, and talking to him I came to realise that it's the extraordinary breadth of his experiences which are lending such a melancholy and dream-like quality to his songwriting.
Jeff Mangum's extended family of musical friendships actually goes way beyond schoolfriend Robert Schneider, and it's this mutual love and respect built up over a number of years which I suspect lends such an intimacy and empathy to the music they all play together.
Given that Jeff's 'typical environment' appears to be a series of squats, cupboards and boiler houses, it's perhaps hard to imagine that a clinical studio environment wouldn't be a more comfortable place to work.

"Jefferson Nigh Mangum", or "Jeff Mangum" (born 1970 in Ruston, Louisiana) is the founder and driving force behind the band Neutral Milk Hotel and one of the cofounders of The Elephant 6 Recording Company.
Jeff eventually expanded the line up of Neutral Milk Hotel and in 1998 released what many consider the band's (and indeed, the Elephant Six Collective's) defining album, ''In the Aeroplane Over the Sea''.
Mangum has kept out of the public eye since then (although not without intrusive fans speculating on his whereabouts), rarely if ever playing acoustic sets and concentrating more on his recorded sound and music collages.

Jeff Mangum: Orange Twin Field Works, Vol. 1: Pitchfork Record Review
In fact, Mangum's distinctive, shaky voice is nowhere to be found.
While Mangum's fellow Elephant 6 chums were busy taking inspiration from the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Zombies and their ilk, Mangum was peppering his work with bagpipes, tape loops, singing saws, and a whole slew of other instruments and sounds too bizarre too identify-- yet he always made them easy to identify with.

Jeff Mangum is the frontman of the acid-weird indie-rock group known as Neutral Milk Hotel.
Mangum tends to create strange, tangled, vivid songs, and they don't lose their punch because he's playing acoustic music in a coffeehouse.
If you told me Jeff Mangum would be playing again for a few friends at a coffee house in Athens, Georgia: I would leave before you finished telling me. I would pay just about whatever price it took to get there.

Jeff Mangum's Live at Jitter Joe's sees the Neutral Milk Hotel mastermind performing alone on an Athens, GA, stage, his voice accompanied only by his acoustic guitar and a mostly indifferent live audience.
Like Darnielle, Mangum attacks his guitar with wrenching abandon and affects a vocal delivery of significant emotion, his voice frequently cracking from strain.
Mangum performs with no set list, instead allowing a small audience of friends to choose the songs, making for frequent extended segments of silence and tedious asides.

The true test of a quality song is how well it stands up in its barest form, and even without the rest of the band, the songs on ‘Live at Jittery Joe’s’ completely live up to the recorded versions.

Interview with Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel
Confusion is, necessarily, openness to possibility, and it's that openness that inspired Mangum as a young songwriter.
It's rare that a band is able to succeed at exploring in a realm of no-limits while still infusing its music with a rooted sense of emotion and personality.
Neutral Milk Hotel, even though they're clearly of this decade, unafraid of the contemporary recording studio (at least of your relatively low-tech recording studio), are arguably folk musicians: their music doesn't sound in the least as if it's trying very hard to conform to anyone's pet genre or radio format.

Paste Magazine :: News :: Jeff Mangum makes triumphant return to the stage (Page 1)
Last night, those in attendance at the Olivia Tremor Control's Bowery Ballroom show in New York City were treated to a pleasant surprise.
Jeff Mangum, infamously reclusive frontman of Neutral Milk Hotel and founding OTC drummer, made his first onstage appearance in close to four years, performing with the band to rapturous applause from the crowd.
After lending vocals to "I Have Been Floated" and returning for more singing during the encore, Mangum playfully jumped around the stage, and—for a grand finale—was tackled by former Neutral Milk Hotel bandmate Julian Koster before disappearing just as easily as he'd emerged.
