Jeff Ott - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jeff Ott is a longtime member of the Berkeley punk community, fronting seminal bands such as Crimpshrine and Fifteen.
Ott's lyrics are politically influenced and he writes about such controversial subjects as rascism, homophobia, misogyny/male supremacy, classism, hierarchy, and greed.
Some of Ott's solo music breaks from the tearing guitars and rapid tempos of punk for traditional singer/songwriter fare; his lyrical content, however, is still based on punk's power-to-the-people activism.

I'd love to quote many of Ott's acerbic lyrics for you, but I'll stick to a quick example: "The War on Terrorism is based on the premise that you're stupid enough to be had".
Ott uses lyrical misdirection to great effect on "Victory is Mine", which tells the story of a child growing up to overcome his abusive mother.
Ott's simplistic handling of the subject is also revealed in his references to the Velvet Undergound's "Heroin", which has been held as both praising and condemning of the drug.

Jeff: It seems like it took a long time because I didn’t quite have it ready in time for this previous summer, but I think it took about a year to write.
Jeff: My understanding, which is kind of minimal, is that I couldn’t even explain why, but I listened to something on the radio the other day and it seems that there’s some form of trick to the way that it’s being handed back, like there’s a setup to it.
Jeff: [Long pause] I guess the first thing is that they just shouldn’t accept how our society deals with gender and power and all that I can’t find one simple word to sum up…but just all of that stuff.
