Jeff Robbin is a vice president of consumer applications at Apple Computer and lead software designer for iTunes.
Jeff developed the program after leaving his job as a system software engineer at Apple.

AppleInsider | Apple fails to patent iPod interface
The company's patent application, which lists Apple vice president Jeff Robbin and Apple chief executive Steve Jobs as two of its primary inventors, received a final rejection last month from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
In an attempt to trump Platt's application, Robbin through his patent lawyer petitioned the patent office to review an amended set of claims last November, shortly after his initial filing had been rejected in light of Platt's.
In his first role as an engineering manager at Apple, Robbin was credited with leading the iPod's software development in the early days of the project.

Jeff had left Apple too by that point and it didn't take much convincing for him to become interested in the project.
I relearned a bunch of math and learned for the first time the basics of DSP (my degrees were in mechanical engineering and CS, so this was all new to me!).
Jeff was in the same boat — he wrote the decoder basically from the ISO doc and the distribution 10 public source, and I did the same for the encoder which turned out to be a much bigger job even though we bought some source code to start from (another story for another day).

How the iPod was invented -- an amazing story
One was a company called SoundStep, founded by a then 28-year-old software engineer with an MBA named Jeff Robbin, who had left Apple literally the month Jobs returned.
Robbin and a couple of other programmers started over from scratch and pounded out the first version of iTunes in less than four months.
In the meantime, Robbin's crew developed a version of iTunes for Windows PCs, expanding the potential market for iPods and the iTunes Music Store to, well, the entire world—as well as delivering a huge, huge ego boost.

Panic - Extras - The True Story of Audion
Created by Bill Kincaid and well-known Mac dev Jeff Robbin, SoundJam was released mere weeks before Audion, even though we had both been in simultaneous development for months, unawares.
Jeff Robbin then asked us a funny question that had obviously been percolating for a while: "Does Audion do any kind of special filtering?" You see, since the beginning of time, press reviews in magazines, websites, etc., had consistently said that Audion simply sounds "better" than SoundJam, without question.
We put Jeff's mind at final, restful ease by blowing the big secret that, no, we also had no idea where that was coming from, but we definitely weren't about to argue.

Jeff Carlson then looks at the star of the Expo, the fast and sleek PowerBook G4 Titanium.
The rewrite seems to have given Jeff a chance to rethink the decisions he made with SoundJam, and iTunes addresses some of the criticisms we've leveled at SoundJam over the years.
Nevertheless, releasing iTunes for free and bundling it with all new Macs makes sense from Apple's standpoint, since it brings home the digital hub role Apple wants the Mac to play by connecting pre-recorded audio CDs with MP3 playback, portable MP3 players, and audio CD creation, all of which are becoming increasingly popular.
