CBC.ca Arts - MoMa retrospective celebrates Canadian photo artist Jeff Wall
The cinematic oeuvre of Canadian photographer Jeff Wall is being celebrated in a new retrospective opening this weekend at New York's prestigious Museum of Modern Art.
In the late 1970s, Wall began creating the large-format, film-like images for which he has become renowned: detailed, carefully composed scenes he captures on transparency film, which he then mounts on lightboxes that light the images from behind.
Wall's images are held in collections around the world.

With this show, Wall may finally get the attention he deserves: At 50, he is among the most accomplished and influential photographic artists of his generation, but the audience for his work has thus far been broader inside the art world than out of it, and more receptive in Europe than on his native continent.
And whatever their content, Wall's pictures have an uncanny ability to walk a very fine line between the obviously artificial and the perfectly natural: Everything in them is carefully staged, but the result feels like a heightened realism, a style more authentic than much of what usually passes for documentary.
Wall sometimes refers to what he does as cinematography, a word that captures his work's drama and luminousness, but not its extraordinary depth; for that, only classical painting serves as the proper precedent.

Jeff Wall, at Marian Goodman, is still super-sizing his light-box transparencies, but his staged images are less operatic, less obviously contrived, and his still lifes (a bloody rag, a grimy wall, a ragged hole in wooden siding) are no less fraught and ominous for their cool restraint.
