County, in east central Georgia southwest of Augusta, was established in February 1796 on land formerly a part of Burke and Warren counties.
Louisville, the county seat, was the third capital of Georgia.
Jefferson County has remained a county of small towns, although the widening of U.S. 1 from Augusta to Wrens is part of a bigger project that is expected to boost the growth of industry throughout the county.

In one of the most competitive state tournaments in recent memory, the Jefferson Dragons edged Bremen and McIntosh County Academy to claim the 2001 State Class A wrestling championship last weekend at Adairsville High School.
Jefferson accomplished the feat even though they were without a representative in the 171-pound weight class.
Jefferson trailed both McIntosh and Brookstone going into the semifinals, but managed to push five wrestlers through the point-heavy round to take a 1.5-point lead.
