Jefferson County was formed out of Thurston County on December 22, 1852, by the legislature of Oregon Territory[1], and included the northern 12,571 km² (4,854 mi²) portion of the Olympic Peninsula.
In the county, the population was spread out with 19.80% under the age of 18, 5.00% from 18 to 24, 21.60% from 25 to 44, 32.50% from 45 to 64, and 21.10% who were 65 years of age or older.
Jefferson County is a staunchly Democratic area, with even rural areas giving significant margins to John Kerry against George W. Bush in the 2004 U.S. presidential election.

For most of its history, Jefferson County's economy has been primarily agricultural, with the area producing grain and other crops for export in the 18th and 19th centuries and orchards playing an important role in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Two of the most important events that shaped the future of Jefferson County were George Washington’s establishment of the Federal Armory at Harpers Ferry in 1799 and the arrival of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1834.
Confederates from Jefferson County were heavily represented in the 12th Virginia Cavalry and the 2nd Virginia Infantry (Stonewall Brigade).

The United States Navy is of great importance to the county because it is the largest employer in the county, with installations at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport, and Naval Base Kitsap (which is comprised of former NSB Bangor, and NS Bremerton).
The portion of the county north of Silverdale is often referred to as North Kitsap, and the portion south of Bremerton as South Kitsap.
In the county, the population was spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 9.20% from 18 to 24, 29.60% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 10.60% who were 65 years of age or older.
