A century ago, the population of Jefferson County, Florida was 15,757 and its neighbor Leon County was 17,752.
Rural Leon and Jefferson counties belong to the "other Florida" with no palm trees, wide avenues, beaches, or grinning lifeguards--a rural landscape still tinted with the vestiges of "Gone with the Wind" plantations, cracker houses, cotillion debutantes, African-American sharecroppers, and domestic servants subsisting on garden plots at the beneficence of wealthy landowners.
In 1983, Jefferson County lost its two automobile dealerships; its FM radio station moved to Tallahassee 12 years ago; and the chef and owner of a local gourmet restaurant signed on with a larger restaurant in Tallahassee.

JEFFERSON COUNTY -- Florida’s ‘green’ budget signed a month ago by Governor Jeb Bush included more than $42 million to expand and improve local parks across the state — a 100 percent increase from 2004.
Funded through the Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program, $200,000 will go to Jefferson County to renovate one local park and enhance nearby communities by increasing outdoor recreation and improving public access to natural Florida.
“Florida’s environment should be preserved for the enjoyment of its residents and visitors,” said Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Colleen M. Castille.
